Wonderful!, February 22, 2011
This review is from: Stand Proud (Mass Market Paperback)
Great book! I think its his best work. Kelton depicts great characters and Texas history throughout this epic story. It would make a wonderful movie and I wish they would make it one!

Not Kelton's Best, but Still Enjoyable, January 18, 2012
This review is from: Stand Proud (Mass Market Paperback)
Though not Elmer Kelton's best work, Stand Proud is nevertheless an enjoyable read. Stand Proud is the story of Frank Claymore, a cowboy turned hard by years of tough living and hard experience. The novel plods along at a slow pace for almost 2/3 of its length, and at times would be unreadable if it weren't for its main character, Frank Claymore. Kelton does not try to make Claymore a likeable figure, necessarily, but rather attempts to show the reader how a man of Principle like Claymore lives his life by his own rules, and the potential consequences of those actions.
At times slow, but with an interesting main character, Stand Proud is not Kelton's best novel, but still belongs on the shelf of anyone who calls themself a fan.
