Editorial Reviews

For his debut recording, acclaimed composer and arranger Steve Owen assembled a gifted group of friends from around the country to bring nine of his masterful works for large jazz ensemble to life. Drawing on the unique voice and ability of each player to frame distinctive musical portraits, he strived for each piece to have a style and voice of its own. From the orchestral opening passages of the recording, to the funky agitation that is State of the Union, or the swinging take on Cole Porter's Everything I Love, Owen's wide-ranging musical interests and unique talents are on full display, as is the musicianship and creativity of his band which includes, among many others, trumpeter Clay Jenkins, saxophonist Todd DelGiudice, trombonists Dave Glenn & Dan Gailey, and drummer Jim White.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big Band album of the year !!!! January 10, 2014
By ECMfan
Format:Audio CD
All of the 15 large ensemble albums released in 2013 bought by me this year are admirable in their own way, This one stands out not only because it is of the Maria Schneider school of composing(which I never get tired of) but also because he takes it to another level on all modalities. Ranging from drone-like meditative somber to power hard rocking swing. This one is obviously mission fulfilled and accomplished on all levels. The feeling of resurrection abounds on this recording. AAAAA ++++++
