This book is ok. It had very little in it that I could not find on the internet. Its very "generic".

Well written but limited in variety and depth. Pictures well done, professional in appearance. Is not a stand-alone text on Remington pistols. Disappointed in breadth of material, leaving out some of the Remington pistols I was researching. It is more of a general interest book on the subject.

Good value,
This review is from: Standard Catalog Of Remington Firearms (Hardcover)
Its hard to rate something when its a first of its kind. I find myself referencing the book for any remington firearm and I haven't been let down. The only thing I have against it is how the values all seem to be arbitrary estimates but they are only intended as a guide anyways. This book is well laid out, good pics and the needed info to assist in buying or selling of just about any remington you can think of. Overall I am very satisfied.

OK for beginners,

I was very disappointed with the lack of content in this book. The descriptions are very short and not detailed (Blue Book of Gun Values has much more information in the descriptions). Pricing information is not complete, for example some firearms do not have the lower condition pricing. Pictures are OK, though many are not clear enough to show detail. I have hundreds of firearm books and am a dealer myself. This book is for beginners only and would be of little use to the moderate or advanced collectors. A real shame because others in the "Standard Catalog of" series are quite nice.

USEFUL AND BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED,

This is a review of the STANDARD CATALOG OF REMINGTON FIREARMS by Dan Shideler. Mine is the hardback edition published in 2008 by Gun Digest Books. This is an attractive, heavily illustrated book featuring some great color photographs by Paul Goodwin and Remington Arms Company.
Dan Shideler is well known to gun buffs for his writing and editorial work on other Gun Digest books. He is also a member of the Remington Society of America and an authority on the company and the firearms it has produced since young Eliphalet Remington crafted his first flintlock in 1816 at his father's forge at Ilion Gulch, New York. Remington is America's oldest gun company. The first center fire rifle I ever fired was a Remington and so was the first shotgun I ever fired. They belonged to my dad and they're still in the family and still popular in the field and on the target range. Both were listed in Shideler's CATALOG along with every other Remington ever produced. There may be some Remington variants not covered, but I couldn't find any. This is not a scholarly history of the company, although there is plenty of history in the catalog. There is also no critical information about Remington products such as the reputation the Model 788 bolt-action repeater had for having the bolt handles break off. I have a 788 and it has always been a good shooter, but I am more careful of its bolt handle than I am of other bolt-action rifles. The book includes appendices including one I like a lot giving the production dates of the major models. It also has an index which makes it even more useful for quick reference. If you're a collector or a shooter with an interest in Remingtons, you'll find a lot to like in Dan Shideler's STANDARD CATALOG OF REMINGTON FIREARMS. I like it and gave it five stars.

I am very pleased with my recent purchase of this book. It gives a histoty of the Remington company as well as lots of pictures of the various guns Remington has produced through the years. Although you could find this information on the internet there's still something about holding a book in your hand and reading it.

Pretty Pictures,
By Jaytee Ranch (Ochelata, Oklahoma) - See all my reviews

Some of the pictures, pretty though they may be, are misleading and make little sense. For the Remington New Model 1858 a cut barrel is shown. For another percussion they show a conversion of the original model. The writing is little better. Buy some coasters instead; you'll save money and the hassle of returning the book.
