4.0 out of 5 stars Great Standard Reference, March 10, 2009

This review is from: Standard Catalog Of United States Paper Money (Standard Catalog of U.S. Paper Money) (Paperback)
This is a great standard reference for United States Paper money, it is not terribly detailed and doesn't cover specialty items well. However as a general reference guide it is quite helpful in identifying potentially valuable pieces of currency. I buy a new guide about every five years rather than each year, most of my interest is in the histoical and types of currency rather than market values. This book would be too out of date for use with market values.

I will continue to buy this book for reference.

2.0 out of 5 stars poor reference, November 26, 2010

This review is from: Standard Catalog Of United States Paper Money (Standard Catalog of U.S. Paper Money) (Paperback)
I bought this book because one of the plate examples is of a paper note I now own. The back cover includes the following description: "No other guide comes close to the amount of information found between these two covers." I wish that were true, but it's not. This book contains many errors -- I don't consider it a reliable reference book. And it is the 27th edition. There are missing Friedberg numbers. For example, early one dollar legal tenders -- the book does not list Friedberg #17b. Even though this is a very rare note (about six known extant), they included Fr. #17 (about five known).

For someone looking for a good first book on currency collecting, I suggest "A Guide Book of United States Paper Money" by Arthur L. and Ira S. Friedberg. As a more serious compliment to that book, I also recommend "Paper Money of the United States" by the same authors. Both of these books contain data for all the Friedberg numbers of large size notes; the latter also includes star notes.
