My rating is based on my expectations. I don't expect to project a dot on the moon from my apartment, but I do expect to project a tight beam on a screen from across the room. I just wish my hand were steadier. I haven't run the batteries down yet, but I have a box full of AAA's, so that shouldn't be an issue. Just remember...if you put the batteries in and it doesn't work...take them out and put them in negative end first.

For reference, the dot is about 2.5mm @ 25 feet. More than adequate for me, although I'd love to get someone to measure it at the advertised 500 yards.
