4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky Arrangements, July 28, 2009

This review is from: Standard Time 4: Marsalis Plays Monk (Audio CD)
Those expecting Marsalis to front a quartet and play straight-ahead arrangements of Monk are going to be disappointed with this release, which features instead Marsalis arranging Monk's music for "small big band:" Marsalis on trumpet, Walter Blanding and Victor Goines on tenor, Wessell Anderson on alto, Wycliffe Gordon on trombone, Eric reed on piano, Ben Wolfe and Reginald Veale on bass, and Herlin Riley on drums. The arrangements are anything but simple and straight-ahead; rather, Marsalis seems to be trying to twist the the quirkiness of Monk's piano stylings into quirky arrangements for his band.

The result is fun, but it takes a bit of getting used to. Herlin Riley is always a joy on the drums, and his mastery of rhythm anchors Marsalis's arrangements. This is a CD that you will need to listen to over and over to really appreciate, but the effort will be well worth it for Monk fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome, March 28, 2009

You would think that these arrangements aren't worth putting on if you have the originals, but they compliment Monk's music well! It shows that his works can be reimagined by any instrument and weren't only for his particular playing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice reading of Monk's genious, September 26, 2008
This review is from: Standard Time 4: Marsalis Plays Monk (Audio CD)
I'm not really sure how to react when I listen to this CD; somehow it falls between the Marsalis' concept of jazz (quite acceptable to me) and Monk's quirky wit (even more acceptable to me)...

It would be silly to demand a Monk album from these interpretations, but Marsalis and company, although swinging nicely, haven't really delivered everything the modern jazz giant Wynton Marsalis is capable of...

At least in my humble opinion...
