5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful BeBop Trombone Quintet, October 3, 2003

This review is from: Standards (Audio CD)
Brass Connection is a Canadian trombone quintet with rhythm section, founded by surgeon Dr. Doug Hamilton. While that may not sound especially promising, fans of BeBop and wonderful trombone jazz will be delighted with this album. The lineup is Ian McDougall on Lead Trombone, Bob Livingston, Jerry Johnson, and Doug Hamilton on tenors and John Capon on bass trombone, with a big rhythm section consisting of Don Thompson, vibes and piano; Bruce Harvey, piano; Lorne Lofsky, guitar; Dave Young, Bass; and Jerry Fuller, Jr. and Brian Leonard on drums. The trombone playing is smooth indeed--the sound clearly pays homage to Frank Rosolino. Arrangements reach a very nice balance of tight, crisp ensemble playing with improvised solos, and also balance the bones against the rhythm section beautifully--the latter isn't there just to provide backup but gets plenty of opportunity to shine also. The CD consists, as you'd anticipate from the title, of standards, but not just in ballad renditions. There's plenty of up-tempo playing, although you might not expect that from the pieces featured: All the Things You Are, Someday My Prince Will Come, My Funny Valentine, I Love You, Mood Indigo, My Shining Hour, My Foolish Heart, and Night and Day. Brass Connection is a terrific group, and this CD is a must-have for any trombone player.
