There are two eds. of this book, and Dyer has a new survey out--so you may wish to buy the survey rather than this--but I still remember how much fun this was to read when I was reading for my orals. Some of the reviews were very critical, but I thought it was particularly good at incorporating archeological evidence to build a coherent picture of life and social change.
