"The most in-depth, complex, and analytically sophisticated portrayal of Yurok spirituality ever written by an anthropologist [and] the most important ethnographic work about the Yurok in general since Kroeber's work in the early twentieth century."-Les W. Field, author of The Grimace of Macho Raton "Its description of Yurok religious practice in recent times is both sympathetic and insightful, providing an interweaving series of narratives and interpretations.... I lived in the Klamath-Trinity area for eleven years and got to know and value the various people of the three tribes in the area, Hupa, Karuk and Yurok. I had the privilege of knowing Jimmy James and Sam Jones (and Sam's wife). I had a shoe repair shop nearby so I first met them there but came to know them as keepers of their land.
Thomas Buckley shares what he learned, experienced and gained from his time among the Yurok people conveys so much of the spirit of the people and I, too, would someday like to go to the dance he mentions.
If you have a love of the land and an appreciation of the spirituality of the Native Americans then this should be of interest. The Yurok tribe isn't famous but because of it, there is more honesty in their tory. Did I love the book. Yes

VERY INTELLIGENT AND ACCURATE VIEW OF THE YUROK .
THANKS FOR THIS BOOK. I KNOW SOME PEOPLE OF THIS TRIBE, THEY ARE WANTING TO GO BACK TO THEIR TRADITIONS;
BADLY THEY ARE A POOR COMMUNITY WITHOUT WORK FOR EVERYBODY.

This is the only comprehensive book on the spirituality of Northwestern Native People. Finely written my a man who is not only a respected Anthropologist, but also a student of one of the last spiritual descendants of the Yurok Shaman, Robert Spott.
