Garth Brooks song Standing Outside the Fire is an amazingly powerful song.
"But you've got to be tough when consumed by desire
'Cause it's not enough just to stand outside the fire"

It makes you remember that you have to go through it - to get it.
Yes, you can arrange your life so the you "just get by", that's not living, that just surviving:

"Standing outside the fire
Standing outside the fire
Life is not tried, it is merely survived
If you're standing outside the fire"
