Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Enlisting in the army for diverse personal reasons, the three teen protagonists of this spirited novel had not counted on the rigors of basic training. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10-- Readers follow three teenagers--one black male, one white female, and one affluent white male--through the day-to-day rigors of basic training in the U. S. Army. Carver joins to escape a dead-end life in the ghetto, Paula wants to finance a college education and mend a broken heart, and David enlists to take on the basic find-yourself/prove-yourself-a-man challenge. Readers learn about the pre-Army lives of all three, including David's problems with his father and stepfather and Carver's concern for his younger sister coping with the advances of their mother's drug dealer boyfriend. Unfortunately, all these plot lines are stereotypical, trite, and treated superficially. Army life is covered in more detail, but, again, the plot is uninspired and predictable: basic training is grueling, their sergeant is sadistic, and they worry about not making it through. In the end, they all succeed, come to appreciate what their sergeant was doing for them, and grow up a little. While young adults may have a need for books on this subject, they also need good, creative literature.Unfortunately, this book simply covers the subject and nothing more. --Janet DiGianni, North Andover High School, MA
