Unknown English works for piano and orchestra worth a listen, January 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Stanford: Piano Concerto 2 in C Minor / Concert Variations Upon an English Theme (Down Among the Dead Men) (Audio CD)
This album was my first exposure to the works of Stanford, and I must admit that the Piano Concerto #2 was fun to listen to. Since then, I have grown fond of this work. Oh, it will remind you of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 (it's even in the same key of c-minor), but Stanford spins some lovely and original tunes and wraps them in rich orchestral fabric. The Variations go a bit too long for my taste, but a few of the variations and simply beautiful. If you are interested in Stanford, but don't want to be introducted by way of piano, I strongly suggest one of the available recordings of his excellent Clarinet Concerto, the only Romantic work of its kind for the clarinet.
