Great stuff,
This review is from: Stanford: String Quintet No. 1; Piano Quintet (Audio CD)
One of those CDs I'm just glad I happened to stumble upon at the listening station of my local CD store. The Stanford piano quintet is a magnificent work, just about as good as any late-Romantic chamber work I've heard, up there with favorites of mine such as the Chausson Concert in D and the Faure quartets. The first movement has a wonderful D-minor melody that stuck in my head for hours after listening to it, as well as a great second theme in F major, and is overall an excellent self-contained movement. The second movement is whimsical, the third exalted; and the finale has a great energy which makes the eight minutes seem like five and eventually moves toward a superb and powerful conclusion. I just bought this CD yesterday and it's already one of my favorite chamber works in my collection. Although I tend to prefer works including a piano to those without, the String Quartet is also a great piece. I highly recommend this CD to anyone.
