This knife was recommended by acclaimed woodworker / teacher: Paul Sellers. Though I certainly do not need another knife, it is very inexpensive, so I got one. Glad I did!

My main use for it is marking wood for joinery. It has several features which make it nearly perfect for that:

1~The replaceable blades are inexpensive, so you can grind different bevel angles and shapes without fear of ruining an expensive tool.

2~ The blades come sharp! Spark-testing on a grinding wheel quickly confirmed high carbon content in the blade. You can fearlessly change the shape for special uses as I did for precision dovetail and tenon marking. The thin blade easily reaches into tight spaces, like those of the persnickety skinny dovetails I sometimes make on little projects or for woodworking demonstrations.

3~ I like the "cheap" factor of this tool. I can close it up, throw it in a portable tool box and not worry about it, just as many people do with standard retractable blade knives. The difference is this is smaller and has flat sides. That makes it easier to register the thin-long blade against the inside of dovetails because you can "feel" and see the angle as you hold it. The flat sides also prevent it from rolling on a bench as some expensive boutique knives do.

4~ The locking mechanism feels very secure, although I have not given it any brutal tests yet. It opens easily and locks in place with no lateral wobble. That's important for marking accurate joinery!

Although it is not steel, the high-density polycarbonate body is very rigid and has nice heft, yet it is lightweight; All those attributes are advantages in my book!

This review is for the Stanley 10-049 Pocket Knife with Rotating Blade Stanley 10-049 Pocket Knife with Rotating Blade.
I have owned this pocket knife since December 2009.

This knife makes a good tool, but there are some downfalls of the design.

The Blade
The blade is a modified sheepsfoot blade. The modification that Stanley made creates a thinner, sharper tip than a traditional sheepsfoot blade. This blade resembles a disposable razor blade, and cuts similarly to one. The blade does not use a standard "V-Grind" that many pocket knives use. This knife uses a V-Grind with a micro-bevel. This micro-bevel causes the knife to be very sharp, at the cost of edge retention. The blade on my knife, has a tendency to hit the handle when closing. I tried adjusting the pivot screw. The screw was either secure and the blade hit the handle occasionally, or the screw was too loose and could come out during use.

The Steel
The edge retention, as with your average razor blade, is poor. However, due to the thinness of this knife and the grind, when I would consider this knife dull, it still cuts decently. I have never bothered buying replacement blades, and instead, I sharpen the original blade. The blade has been sharpened at least 10 times and the edge is in good condition. If you are able, I recommend sharpening the blade, as opposed to buying a new one.

The Handle
The powder-coating on this knife makes the knife too slick. I assume that this coating is to make the handle appear to be metal, when it's plastic, epoxy handle according to the Stanley website. Due to the slickness of this knife and the small finger choil, your hand is likely to slip into the blade. I recommend wearing a glove every time you use this knife.

My husband uses his Stanley 10-049 for general use and while packing plastic products at work, where it gets use constantly. It holds up well and cuts through tape and cardboard boxes all night long. Working 7 days a week for 8 hours or more it went over 6 months before needing a new blade! A simple, quality pocket knife.

I bought one of these three years ago from a local hardware store. I only went it to have a key cut, but seeing one of these on the rack next to the checkout, I grabbed one with the idea of leaving it in the car for emergencies, opening blister packs and slicing/peeling fruit food etc. It never made it to the car, I carry it with me everywhere I go. It's used practically every day, whether it's opening boxes, stripping cables. slicing cheese. cutting paper or 101 other uses. The blade is very sharp, and although it's easy to replace the blade, I just sharpen the existing blade every few months using the knife sharpener in the kitchen. The knife blade is a nice size tackling most jobs, it holds an edge for ages and it folds away and locks open with ease. The handle is nice to hold, and although it's made of resin, ot feels more like aluminium. I've just bought another two, this time one is going to make it to the car, and the other sits next to my chair, where I use it for hundreds of tasks. A nice product, well worth the money, Buy one, you won't be dissapointed

There are already lots of reviews of this knife here on Amazon and most are favorable so I won't reiterate the virtues of this great little pocket knife.

Like some others, I found this knife via a recommendation by Paul Sellers, the woodworking instructor and blogger from the U.K. My only disappointment was that the knife, as sold in the USA, comes with the 11-040 SHEEPFOOT HEAVY CUTTING BLADE installed. It is clear by the photos in Paul's blog, that he uses the 11-041 FINE CUTTING BLADE in his. With the fine blade, this tool becomes a good marking knife for woodworking.

The good news is that Amazon sells the fine blades individually and they are easily installed.

So, if you're here because you want an inexpensive marking knife like Paul Sellers' knife, you should order an 11-041 Fine Cutting replacement blade along with your Stanley knife.

Mike

EDIT: Stanley specifications say the sheepfoot blade is .040 inches thick and the fine cutting blade is .024 inches thick.
