Hand planes are like musical instruments: you can't just take them out of the box and play. With that in mind I'll run through the things I had to do to get this plane tuned and usable.

Grind the sole: Stanley left the sole and sides of the plane body rough with machine marks. It's mostly true, but not quite. I spent about twenty minutes working the sole. The high spots got pretty smooth and that was as far as I cared to take it. You could grind it all the way down to a mirror finish; but it'd take a lot longer than I wanted to spend on this tool.

The heart of any plane is the blade. The steel in this one is on the thin side and a bit crude. It was about twenty minutes just to get the back flat. Then on to salvage an ugly, coarsely ground bevel...

I have large hands and the handle felt just a bit small. The plastic handle and knob both have prominent mold lines perfectly placed as blister makers. Both came off and were easy to sand smooth.

All together, it took about two hours, a granite tile and a few sheets of sandpaper to go from box to first shavings. Nothing spectacular, but it's a servicable plane and I'm glad to have it in the shop. Recommended, just be prepared to spend some time cleaning it up and making it your own.

An awful bench plane, don't waste your money.

Pros:
-Inexpensive
Cons:
- No Chipbreaker
- Combined Knife Level and Depth Controls
- Knife Controls Poorly Located
- Knife Controls too Small
- Thin Blade

Based on the number of reviews, I had high hopes that this plane would be good quality even though it is *Dramatically* cheaper than competitors. After spending hours working with it, I hate it.

Cost

You can't beat the cost of this Bench Plane.

Durability

On arrival the plane seems very solid. But on closer inspection, you will find that the handles are a very light plastic. After a few weeks of use, the handles are already loose (although they can be tightened).

If you compare the Plane to other bench planes, you will also discover that the sole is made from a much thinner metal. The knife is also short and about half the thickness of normal knives. Finally, the screw system that is used to adjust knife position is made from very thing stock.

Ease of Use

For $15, I could tolerate a lot of durability problems, I mean if it breaks once a year, I could go 10 years before equaling the spending of the high end planes. Sadly, the problems extend well beyond durability.

The depth of the knife as well as the levelness of the knife are both adjusted by the same thumb screws. As a result, you cannot change the depth of the knife without messing up the levelness of the knife.

The adjustment screws also cannot be reached without letting go of the Plane handles. This is contrary to much bench planes which allow the adjustment of the knife depth in between cuts without letting go of the handles.

It's difficult to get the iron where you want it. The bolt and nut adjuster design is a bit awkward and the handle and knob are pretty cheap plastic. Other than that it is a pretty good deal for what you do get from the tool, when compared to other tools/products i've bought for the same price in these oh-so-outsourced-and-cheapened days we live in. It's unfortunate that a company with early American roots to be the manufacture who now focuses on producing as many tools as possible by cutting costs and de-emphasizing quality, what it used to stand by.

And not that it hampers functionality at all, but the "STANLEY" emblem sticker on the frog is that kind of sticker that you find on the cheapest-of-the-cheap made-in-china toys. As in, it might as well not even be there because it's not going to stick. I can move the "sticker" around on the dedicated space for it on the cast of the frog. I know i can do this because i had to to make the "sticker" actually straight how it should have been when i opened the package. Stanley, do you have such a poor self-image that you don't even have the decency to apply your company's name on the product permanently?? Stickers on planes??? What went wrong Stanley? Is implementing your name into the cast that expensive?

Also, i'm pretty sure these instruction manual it came with is the actual original manual of that model plane (which is very old). The text on the manual is close to unreadable in certain places, and what's with the step to lift the "lever" (by lever they meant the frog). The step made no sense with the tool i had in my hands. STANLEY, if you're going to cheapen an old original model that had quality, don't insult me by trying to pass it off as truly original by just sticking the old outdated instructions in the box.

I have been collecting Stanley woodworking planes for many years and I was intersted in this unit as it is fully adjustable and very easy to use. The cost is reasonable and the quality of the #4 plane is excellent. While it is not of the quality of the very old Stanley wood planes it does an excellent job for the money. I would recommend this unit to anyone needing a woodworking plane to be used for reasonable working jobs or as a basic starter plane.
