I work in a studio that specializes in wood turnings and carvings. We have literally hundreds of chisels skews and gouges of every type. The quality of these is on par with lower priced German and English bevel edge chisels with the blade being slightly better than average. The back of the chisel is milled flat but you first have to get through a few mils of lacquer to lap them. Be careful stripping it off with lacquer thinner if you want to lap the back as the handles are also lacquered. The blades have unusually accurate and consistent edge angles and even the tool marks are symmetric and parallel. Being a new line of tools for Stanley, and lacking any sign of hand finishing, this leads me to believe they are being produced on new tooling which would account for the uniformity. The European beech- wood handle is shorter and lacks the finesse of the best Sheffield, or German tools but is by no means as sloppy as some examples I've seen recently. They're delivered sharp but not honed as you'd expect. I lapped the first one by hand to get a feel for the hardness of the steel. I's hard chrome steel, and I haven't seen any sign of brittleness. Within two minutes I was able to produce true shavings on end grain cherry. After a few days of heavy mallet use, I have found that both the blade and handle are more than adequate to the task. The tool roll is a nice perk too.
These tools are beefier than a standard bench or paring chisel but not as stout as a firmer. These are not available in rosewood or hornbeam or individually or in larger sizes, a missed opportunity. I tried a set of these because I just like the German handle style as a matter of personal preference when working with a mallet.

These are just what I was looking for, for the last 8/9 months an affordable high end set of already grinded sharp as a razor wood handled metal strike. Wood chisels, I was not looking to spend a couple of hundred bucks either, then along comes this set. I bought it as soon as I found it and am very happy. I have been using chisels since the late seventies, I know how valuable a good sharp chisel is tool any kind of woodworker! Bravo Stanley!

It took several passes over a 220 grit water-stone to get the grinder marks off the bottom of the chisels. I can say though that they are completely flat! That part was much appreciated! Somewhere in my research I remember reading that they paid close attention to making sure their chisels were flat and it would seem to have paid off. I was able to polish the back and the edge to a mirror finish and they are razor sharp. I started with a 220 to get the back smooth and then went through 1000/4000/8000. The steel seems to be hard enough to maintain a decent edge. Time will tell.

I will start that I am an armature wood worker, and these are my first set of "nice" chisels (first set that I payed more than $12 for). I am glad that I got these chisels, they feel good in the hand and I am looking forward to using them for many years to come. Out of the box the chisels look and feel impressive.

The reason I gave them 4 start instead of 5 stars are because of two things that I was disappointed with, the so called "Upgraded brass ferrules" and the advertising of being "extra sharp out of the packaging". The Brass ferrules were loose and I could easily spin almost everyone of them with my hands. As for the sharpness, I think these chisels are usable of the packaging but not "extra sharp". I was able to do some pairing with these chisels out of the box in some pine lumber but I would have had a very hard time pairing in some hardwood. I think the coat of lacquer they put on the chisel to protect from rust mitigates any extra sharpness they put on it at the factory. After using the chisels on a project I could see were the lacquer has chipped away on the cutting edge of the chisels. In all honesty no one should really expect truly sharp chisels from the factory. I know once I spend some time and sharpen them myself they will be able to do anything I want them to.

The leather roll that is included is a nice bonus and handy to keep the chisels in but I still keep the plastic tips the chisels come with to protect the cutting edge.

Overall I would recommend these without hesitation to someone who is looking for a good set of chisels but doesn't want to drop hundreds of dollars on a sets of chisels.

The chisel in the set look and feel good, and the leather tool roll is nice, but the back of each chisel was cupped and had significant lateral tool marks. Each chisel required between 10 and 20 minutes to flatten and polish the back, and I didn't try to flatten the entire back, just the area near the edge, back a half inch or so. The steel quality seem to be excellent, and once the chisels were tuned up, I believe they're as good as any at any price.

I bought these as a backup set to take care of tasks where I would'nt want to use my nicer chisels, but after receiving them and seeing the quality, I have decided to store them away and give them to my brother. I was pleasantly surprised and recommend these chisels, they are a fine set for any woodshop.
