4.0 out of 5 stars So I own a few hammers
(...). Thing is, while I use hammers frequently, I don't do it for a job 40+ hours a week.

Which brings us to this hammer... is it my favorite hammer... no, do I grab it first, no, does it even get the honored spot of being in my tool belt most of the time? Again, no. That said, will it drive nails and nail sets and pound on my wrecking bars without putting nice...

1.0 out of 5 stars Crooked Hammer
I don't know if this is part of the design but the hammer is bent to the left. Looks great when not being used though.

(...). Thing is, while I use hammers frequently, I don't do it for a job 40+ hours a week.

Which brings us to this hammer... is it my favorite hammer... no, do I grab it first, no, does it even get the honored spot of being in my tool belt most of the time? Again, no. That said, will it drive nails and nail sets and pound on my wrecking bars without putting nice waffle prints everywhere? Most definately. Is there something to the anti-vibe magic? I think so. I don't think it's as good at dampening the vibration as a nice hickory handle, but it's better than most hammers with steel or fiberglass handles. And will it hold up better? Especially if you aren't the most experienced at hitting what you are aiming at? Most definitely.

Conlusion if you need a hammer that doesn't make waffles this should be one of your candidates.

This is the heavy hammer that every woman has to have. Those dinky hammers just can't do a "man's" job!
Men already know that they need a heavy hammer. But women have to be told. This is the hammer to buy for the big jobs.
My girlfriend LOVES her new hammer!

4.0 out of 5 stars This Hamer Nails it Home!, March 14, 2008
This review is from: Stanley Flat Max 51-944 20-Ounce AntiVibe Rip Claw Nailing Hammer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased this for my 64 year old retired father. He was a contractor and is able to do just about EVERYTHING, so is very picky about his tools and toys and has about everything and mostly all top of the line.

He loved the fact that this is stainless steel, is solidly constructed, has a nice curved rip end to easily remove nails, has a nice grip on it, balance is great, and feels nice in his hand.

However, when he received it, he was disappointed that this was not made in the USA but Mexico instead, but at least it wasn't made in the East where most of the cheaper made stuff come from. Also, make sure to check the weight on this baby. It's 20oz, which is good to nail in a few nails, but if you're planning on a big project that requires hours, it might get a bit heavy.

The product was so well made and the price was great for what I paid for, that I didn't bother returning it, but instead just bought him the same item in the 16oz in addition.

Recommend, but check out the 16oz too!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Carpenter's Favorite!, February 13, 2007
This review is from: Stanley Flat Max 51-944 20-Ounce AntiVibe Rip Claw Nailing Hammer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I'm always looking for the tool that will help me get it done easier, faster, better, this hammer is my current favorite! The Stanley does everything well, I can punch in trim nails, knock in 3-1/2 duplex with relative speed and ease(It doesn't beat a two foot framing hammer, but it's also not an anchor hanging off my belt fit only for framing either)bash masonry, and demo old walls. I find that it really helps absorb the impact well and one of the biggest advantages is the handle provides FANTASTIC traction and grip! After having hammers fly out of my weak, sweaty hands after marathon framing sessions, this is a tremendous boon. The magnetic starter works very well, but don't expect it to hold anything larger than a 10d. It's also nice to have a hammer that isn't almost a short-sword smashing your leg in with every belted step.
Having used this for a couple of months, i'm going to buy a waffle faced framing model.

It doesn't get much more basic than the hammer...but Stanley made a quantum leap with this one. The anti-vibe really works. If you take this hammer, and an older style (like my Estwing) and hit a hard (concrete or steel) surface, you'll immediately feel the difference. Do that 10,000 times and it may well make the difference between tendinitis or not. The grip is vastly better than my old hammers, so accuracy improves. For me, 20 oz is a good all-around size, and I have always preferred rip-claws for their all-around utility, from demolition to shallow excavation. When my last Stanley anti-vibe 'went missing', I immediately ordered another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Picky hammer owner...., September 26, 2011
This review is from: Stanley Flat Max 51-944 20-Ounce AntiVibe Rip Claw Nailing Hammer (Tools & Home Improvement)
If you are looking for a good hammer, this is the one for you. It's durable...I've hit my flat bar doing demo until I'm tired. No damage to the hammer. Nice balance...feels good in the hand...so much so, that my wife used it, and I had to buy her one...so now we have his and her's. I'm picky about the way hammers feel...since using one all day long tends to be more work if it's unbalanced, too head heavy, etc. I personally like the swing weight of a 20 oz. hammer for all around use. It's great for demo, driving nails, banging on just about anything...like flat bars, cast iron, whatever. I've had mine for over 4 years, and still would recommend it over all other hammers at the big box stores.

I recieved this hammer while in Afghanistan on deployment. I was actually in the process of building up the interior of our tent when the mail came. We had only one hammer so the timing was excellent. The packaging was extreme. It's a hammer afterall, but it was shrink wrapped in bubble wrap believe it or not.

I used it right out of the box and it has good balance, the grip is excellent too. AntiVibe? I dunno. It feels like a hammer, hits like a hammer. Buy it if you need a hammer.
