Top Customer Reviews

We have 4 of these - 1 Radio Shack, about $29 20 years ago; 1 Christmas Time, about $8 at Walmart 15 years ago; 1 generic, $1.00 at a garage sale... and the Stanley. They use 3 stopwatch batteries and a tab must be removed for them to work; the garage sale one had dead batteries.

They are indispensable for electricians - wave them near wires that you need to work on and they light or buzz if the circuit is hot; check with a meter if the wires appear dead. For Christmas lights place it near the middle of the strting, then half way closer to the plug if no signal... or half way further away if it lights, etc.

NOTE: Non-polarized or incorrectly made strings may have the 'hot' wire running the length of the string and you'll get a signal anywhere; turn the plug over to repair that one. Many mini lights have two sections in the string; remove the first bulb in the good part to test the bad section. If both sections are out try to fix the last section in the string first... or save the bulbs for spares.

WARNING: Mini light strings have a 'shunt' that jumpers across the bulb when it blows. Replace blown bulbs immediately because each blown bulb will increase the bulb voltage across the entire string until the blown bulbs 'cascade', blowing one bulb after another. When this happens the bulbs will get brighter and dangerously hot!

NOTE: Inductance between long strands of twisted wire may prevent field proximity testers from being used on LED light strings. (Ya' don't hafta' know what that means; ours just don't work.) LED strings are also made with two sections complicating repair of those. AND - the largest manufacturer of prelit Christmas trees in the USA has discontinued making pre-lit trees with LEDs... the LEDs are too unreliable. Pity; we have one of their trees and the color is perfect - cool like snow but not garish blue like old LEDs.

The quality is very low. It never worked and when attempted to reassembly it, it broke. The only reason I did not return it was because it was cheap enough. Recommend buying it in person and making sure it works before you pay for it.
