Amazon.com Product Description

The Stanley 77-028 Energy Meter EM100 measures how much power a household device consumes--whether it's in active or sleep mode. The meter will calculate the amount of energy the device will use per day, month, or year, so you can compare its readings with U.S. Department of Energy ranges and make an informed decision about which items should be upgraded, unplugged, or removed from your home.

Programmable Meter Gives Clear Energy Readings
The 77-028 features simple, straightforward operation--just plug an appliance into the meter, and then plug the meter into any standard grounded wall outlet or UL/ETL-approved grounded 15-amp or 20-amp extension cord. In 10 seconds, the display will show the energy a particular item will consume in a day, month, or year--measurements will appear in your preset choice of amperes, watts, or kilowatts.

To get the most accurate results, keep your appliance plugged into the meter for 24 hours. And to see how much money your device will cost you on your next utility bill, just program your area's energy prices into the meter, and the meter will do the math for you.

For convenience, the 77-028 comes with two button cell batteries that allow the unit to store your settings.

Affordable and Informative
The 77-028 is a low-cost investment that can end up paying for itself in saved energy costs. And the information it provides gives you a clear picture of which appliances and devices in your house are truly energy efficient, which need to be unplugged when not in use, and which need to be replaced.

Calculates Hidden Costs
The 77-028 is ideal for calculating the hidden cost of "vampire energy"--the amount of money spent leaving certain items like cell phone or MP3 player chargers, laptops, entertainment centers, and DVD players continually plugged in.

There's never any guesswork with this handy meter. If you have more than one item plugged into a power strip, the 77-028 can show either the strip's energy total or the energy consumed by each item.

What's in the Box
77-028 energy meter; two button cell batteries; and manual.

It says Stanley on the cover; but this electronic "tool" does not meet Stanley quality.
The instruction book is modest but easy to understand. It says the meter will count down upon detecting electric power. This one does no such thing. It measured a high amp product such as a fan but could not detect a TV in passive mode, a cable modem, a radio in active mode and it even ignored a working toaster. It jumped all over the place with a light fixture.

The telephone service people are nice but clueless. They had no idea how the meter works. If a Stanley hand tool fails, Stanley will send a new one. They won't do the same for this electronic gadget; I think I know why. As another person implied here, it costs more to return than it's worth.

The product is covered by the limited lifetime warranty so I will just return it to where it was purchased, maybe in a year or so because the store is nowhere near where I live. It will be interesting to see if the warranty is indeed honored. I would not recommend purchasing this meter.

Poorly designed August 30, 2010
By steve d
I have used the Kill-a-Watt energy monitor for years and thought I would try Stanley's version. Unfortunately, most of the applicances I want to monitor have right-angle plugs. Stanley needs to flip the input receptacle 180 degrees to allow the use of right angle plugs or supply a 12" pigtail with their unit. With a right angle plug inserted directly into the current unit, it is difficult (impossible)to plug the monitor into a wall outlet without stressing the cabling. SD

Gadget Factor December 30, 2009

This wins for the gadget factor. Great gift for the person who likes gadgets. It was easy to use right out of the box. I am not sure what the long-term use of this product will be. Once you go around the house and figure out what uses the most energy, it will go in the "stuff" drawer.
