3.0 out of 5 stars Low Cost but Workable, August 27, 2007
By
This review is from: Stanley 77-186 Single Point Laser Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
This SPK laser kit is OK but don't expect to use it outside in the daylight for more than 10 feet with the single point. The line would be useless outside. The 50' range specification would be on a dark night or in a dark room. It is difficult to work outside at night without waking the neighbors though. The Stanley SP1X laser is at least twice as bright, but even it is useless outside in the daylight. The SPK laser head also has a storage pocket for the line spreader. A second storage pocket would accept a 90° beam splitter if you happen to have one but there is no steel retaining plate installed. The line spreader attachment (and other attachments) use a magnetic ring to hold on to the front of the laser head. As other reviews have pointed out, the tripod is flimsy. The tripod will do the job for a home project. The tripod is also short. Maximum beam height is only about 43 inches above the floor. The crank adjustment range is about 1 foot. The tripod has a standard 5/8-11 male thread fixed mount on the top. The leveling base screws down on that standard mounting thread. A very cheap and simple adapter could be made from the cut-off end of a 5/8" bolt with a 1/4-20 tapped hole in it to fit a more robust tripod, -although many tripods use the 5/8-11 thread mount system. The leveling base can also be placed on any even surface. The leveling base has a 1/4-20 male threaded brass stud in the center that screws into the bottom of the laser head. The leveling base will allow the laser head to rotate if a cheap plastic threaded knob is loosened slightly. The knob is also threaded into thin plastic so don't tighten it very tight. The leveling base has a 360° scale on top but it can not be read under the level so it is useless but "decorative". The power level, construction, accessories, and brightness of this unit would make it useless for a professional but for an indoor home unit it will work.

3.0 out of 5 stars good laser, bad tripod, July 20, 2008

This review is from: Stanley 77-186 Single Point Laser Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
The laser works just fine and its great even for doing profile drawings with the added on laser-chalk line gadget. However, the tripod is trash! The wheel mechanism to lift the platform is sooo flimsy i broke it the first time i tried it. The leveling platform for the laser is pretty uneven too so you have to check and recheck the bubble level every time you turn the laser - dont think you can just whip it around and still be at the same level. Apart from this, if your careful, its a pretty useful gadget, for a relatively good price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap Non-standard tripod, March 23, 2006
By
This review is from: Stanley 77-186 Single Point Laser Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this unit knowing that the supplied tripod was junk, though the rest of the unit appeared to be well engineered and reasonably constructed. I figured I could toss out the tripod and use one that I already had. Stanley foiled this plan by making the tripod mount a thoroughly non-standard one. You are forced to use the short, lightweight tripod that comes with the unit.
