Quality Level,
By Redabook "Matt" (Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stanley 77-500 IntelliLaser Pro Stud Sensor and Laser Line Level (Tools & Home Improvement)
I haven't had the problems that the other reviewers have. The tabs can't be too sticky without pulling the paint off the wall, so they are just sticky enough to hold it up. Sometimes it helps to wipe the spot on the wall clean before applying the leveling tool. It definitely works better on a smooth wall than a textured one.
The stud finder is one of the more comprehensive ones I have seen, with built in bubble leveler. It has a a nice charm and it allows you to adjust for the thickness of the material you are trying to scan through. Overall, I thought this product was just fine. The other reviewers were fixated on the tabs, but did not comment on the quality of the leveler/stud-finder itself.

Good, Has Drawbacks,
This review is from: Stanley 77-500 IntelliLaser Pro Stud Sensor and Laser Line Level (Tools & Home Improvement)
I was originally looking for just a stud finder, but when I was looking at the selection (I admittedly bought mine at a hardware store, not Amazon) I liked that this was competitively priced with other electronic stud finders with AC detection but this included laser levels. Thinking back to a level job I just recently completed, and thinking that this would have made my life easier then, I picked it up.
I've now used it for two jobs and although I'm generally happy, there are some areas that one should keep in mind before purchasing. *) Many have commented on the laser line level's feet not retracting. This isn't really an automatic process - you need to manually push them in first until they click lock, then when you're ready to dismount from the wall you use the top button to release them. It wasn't obvious at first, but once I figured that out, it stayed on the wall like a champ. *) The unit comes with 8 adhesive dots. They are that gummy stuff you find holding credit cards to the info mailing page that sticks well to everything but always rolls off cleanly. The dots that come with this have little tabs you pull to stretch/release from the laser line plate - they don't always come off as expected and I've already destroyed two. I can't find replacements sold separately or even thru Stanley's web site, but o their credit, when I emailed them with an inquiry, they sent me quite a few extra for free. *) The stud finder is also a laser line, great for use as a line level or a cross line to the laser line level unit - but unlike the laser line level, there is no way to "mount" this, so it isn't usable as a hands-free second line level. *) The stud finder is pretty big. I of course knew its size on purchase, but it became very noticeable when I attempted to use it in tighter spaces. *) The stud finder's laser is always on. I have no idea why you can't turn it off and on as needed. So ultimately I am happy enough with the product but if it ever died, I will probably look for single-purposed tools - a smaller stud finder and stand-alone laser levels.

This is the best stud finder I have used and being a finish carpenter, I've used plenty. Haven't used the level thingy yet, but I didn't buy this for that. The finder is very versatile and accurate and gives you a great picture of whats in the wall and not just studs.

look elsewhere for a line level,
This review is from: Stanley 77-500 IntelliLaser Pro Stud Sensor and Laser Line Level (Tools & Home Improvement)
the stud sensor works fine but I can't say the same for the line level the "dots" just don't do the job of holding it in place while you work. I can't tell you how many times I have had to pick mine up.

Hey I like this sensor, I'm not real handy but these can easily find studs. The sensor is confused by being near king and cripple studs and wasn't the most help around windows. finding the studs in the middle of a wall is a snap. Recommend.

Not truly "hands-free",

I bought this with high hopes. The sticky tabs do not stick to the wall, because the "legs" will not retract like they are supposed to. Also, it is supposed to project a line up to 20 ft. but does not.
I am returning it today. The only redeeming quality is that the stud sensor is good. However, I already have a stud finder which is just as accurate and was much less expensive.

The stud finding features were very accurate and found wires also very accurately. The laser level worked very well and I would recommend this product.

I saw this being used on DIY by the host of that show where the bald guy helps people who's renovations were bad and taking to long to complete. I can not think of the name of the show for the life of me. Anyways......this works really good for finding studs. The electrical wire sensor seems to be almost always going off and I don't know why. There was no electrical at all in the wall I was using it on, but it kept showing electrical wiring.

AC always being detected,
By InternetHOTSPOTdotCA (Cobourg, Ontario) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stanley 77-500 IntelliLaser Pro Stud Sensor and Laser Line Level (Tools & Home Improvement)
The Stanley IntelliLaser Pro model 77-500 seems to detect AC pretty much 80-90% of the time. I have 1x wire in the ceiling, with wooden joists, and no matter where I place the unit, it detects AC. I just want to find the studs but instead I am distracted with AC alerts. As they don't make AC wires 3 feet wide, I have to assume that it is the unit that is to blame.
