this was a great item when it was made properly, in the u.s.a. the design definately stands the test of time.
problem; companies think that by outsourcing to china they will make more money. not true. this thing is so poorly made that it fell apart in two different places on the first use. the cup came apart from lid and the handle fell off the thermos. not good...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Legendary Product from Stanley!, May 5, 2008

Stanley thermoses have been a part of our family for generations, going back to my great grandfather. Stanley has a reputation for ruggedness and high-quality, and this Stanley Outdoor Lunchbox cooler lives-up to that reputation. First of all this combo comes with one of Stanley's famous vacuum flask thermoses. Vacuum flask technology is the best technology for preventing thermal attrition (keeping your hot drinks hot and your cold drinks cold). I enjoy my coffee very hot and my water ice cold. When I received this I tested it and found that it kept my coffee nice and hot (not lukewarm) for over 2 days! As for cold, it had ice in my ice water in it after almost 3 days (and I live in the south where it's warm).

The entire bottle is stainless steel. It is double-walled, with a vacuum between the steel walls. The screw-on stopper seals very nicely and is made of a very strong plastic, it seems very solid. The cup fits well and is solid plastic with chrome on the outside.

The cooler has two compartments inside:
The larger compartment is 7-1/8 in. x 7-7/8 in. (inside dimensions)
and the smaller compartment is 7-1/8 in. x 4-1/4 in. (inside dimensions)

The cooler works very well (amazingly well, actually) keeping food nice and cool - I also add one of those plastic ice packs to keep it cold things really cold and at the end of the day the ice pack itself is barely melted/almost totally solid ice still. It has a nice locking handle that when placed in the upright position snap-locks the lid onto the cooler and locks the thermos between the cooler and the handle (there is a curved recess in the top of the lid that the thermos fits onto and when the handle is in place, that thermos will NOT fall-out accidentally). The cooler is compact and easy to carry, and a appropriately sized (not some huge cooler like you take to the beach).

I must say that I am impressed with the quality and innovativeness of the design. It is definitely a must-have for students, in offices and commuting to work, on the job where ruggedness is required, and out on the trail. The only drawback I see is that it is made in China instead of the U.S.A. Personally, I'd happily pay double the price for one that was made in U.S.A. In any case, a good Stanley product is worth the investment. I am very happy with the product.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great work box, great customer service from Stanley, June 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stanley Classic Lunchbox Cooler & Bottle Combo (Sports)
The thermos is amazing and keeps hot water hot for over 24 hours, the cooler is good with ice to keep your lunch cool for about 3-6 hours depending on how hot of an area you keep the box. Mine has held up well for being bounced around in tractors and in the back of my pickup for some time. The thermos is heavy steel and has dented and scratched but that is to be expected with hard use.

It would be nice if the divider in the lunch box was removable, I have considered cutting it out of mine.

Update:

I have used this setup for some time now. I throw my lunchbox in the back up my pickup. On a day that was -18 outside the handle broke on the lunchbox. I contacted Stanley customer service via email and was sent a replacement lunchbox. I paid extra for the quality, and the quality shows up in their customer service. Now I can continue to use these quality products for many more years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have awesome lunchbox !, January 1, 2009

(REAL NAME)
My husband has had his Stanley Lunchbox Combo for 23 years! He is a commercial carpenter so you can guess this product isn't always handled with the best of care. Just now, the handle is starting to lose its grip so I am finally getting him a new set. And, this entire combo has been in the dishwasher---many times. I know it says not dishwasher safe, but I find that to only be a suggestion (sometimes you just have to sanitize it better than hand washing); working in construction it gets all kinds of dirt and dust on it and in it. Also I have read some other reviews on the compartment size....no complaints here...this compartment fits his lunch (and he's not eating finger sandwiches either!!) and his coffee break snack as well. And the smaller side compartment is perfect for those things you dont want to mix with your lunch such as your napkin, car keys, bottle of Tylenol, additional snacks, breath mints (and yes, it fits all of these items not just one!)
An adjustable fitting wouldn't work here, with its heavy construction you'd be squishing your sandwich. Nah keep it just the way it is. I'd love it if they made them in other colors so I could get one of my own! (something a little more girly would be nice)

the lunch box handle barely functions and the thermos handle has broken off in two seperate locations.not cool.
this is a prime example of something really cool going straight to h@#$ when it was decided to stop manufacturing in america. do us consumers a favor and just discontinue making things rather than pretend that they are still the same. its not good for you or me. the only one who profits is the chinese manufacturer who does shoddy work and underpays its workers. totally lame...

4.0 out of 5 stars Huge - won't fit in my work locker. Latch very difficult to open., April 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stanley Classic Lunchbox Cooler & Bottle Combo (Sports)
Overall this is a nice thermos and lunchbox set, but I wish they would make it in a smaller size for work; neither the thermos nor the lunchbox will fit in my work locker. The lunchbox is huge, so I have to wonder about the appetite of anyone who says it is too small for lunch! My son-in-law is 6'4" and solid, but even he uses a medium size lunch bag.

The latch that locks the thermos in place is very difficult for me to open, so I have to return it. Except for the latch problem, and the size, I would love to keep this set. My rating is for the apparent quality (except for the latch), and the lifetime warranty, although I have not used it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly What I Needed, March 16, 2011

This lunch box was exactly what I was looking for: 1) it comes with a bottle that is easy secured to the lunch box for transport, 2) there are two compartments inside the box, one of which is big enough to house a food jar.

When I initially bought this lunch box, I followed the recommendation and also purchased the Stanley 20oz. Bolt Vacuum Food Jar. The Bolt Vacuum Food Jar arrived broken, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I would not recommend buying the Bolt Food Jar unless you don't mind carrying the food jar separately from the lunch box, or unless you don't mind putting it into the larger compartment within the lunch box, which means you won't have much room for other stuff.

If you want your hot food jar inside the lunch box, I would recommend Thermos Stainless King SK3000MB4 Food Jar, Midnight Blue. It fits nicely in the smaller compartment inside the lunch box. You can then put some kind of cold dish in the bigger compartment, and add a couple of reusable ice packs to keep the food cold.

I've been using this lunch box for a week now. I split the food up so that I eat a little bit at a time, usually about five times a day if I can. I typically will fill the bottle with filtered water or ice tea. If I fill it with some ice cubes, I've kept the liquid cold for 24 hours. After eight hours, I can still get a brain freeze if I drink too fast!

Inside the lunch box I may typically pack something like 16 oz of homemade chili in the food jar (I won't review that here, since this review is about the lunch box), a small banana and a small apple, and a small tupperware container filled with about 16 oz of green bean salad or potato salad.

I'm on the road all day, and sometimes I can't stop for a proper meal. This lunch box works perfectly for me. And since either me or my wife makes everything that goes into the lunch box, I know exactly what I'm eating, and I know I'm not being poisoned by some punk parolee working in the kitchen of some diner.

Got for my husband for work. He likes it. Opens fine for him, but I had some trouble. The latch sticks, for those who aren't very strong.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice lunch cooler, but not enough space, November 25, 2008

I really like the lunch cooler and thermos combo. However there is not enough room for your lunch inside. The divider should be removable or adjustable for more room.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for a big lunch, March 28, 2010

This review is from: Stanley Classic Lunchbox Cooler & Bottle Combo (Sports)
This product is fantastic. Its built well and has a look that is Americana as can be. Don't be fooled by the photos though, this lunch box is big. Not ideal for office use, its built about the size of a small cooler. If you need a quart of coffee throughout the day and can't brew it while your out, get this guy. Need enough space for two meals? The cooler here is for you. If not, find something a little smaller.

5.0 out of 5 stars classic, February 3, 2009
This review is from: Stanley Classic Lunchbox Cooler & Bottle Combo (Sports)
My husband had one of these when he was 18/19/20 and in the seperatation his ex kept it (apparently her new boyfriend also liked it!!). This winter he had a job change and works long days and needs to pack lunch again, he wanted it and loves it. Its big enough for him to pack a couple of meals but not so bulky it takes up too much room in his work truck.
