3.0 out of 5 stars Just doesn't match up
This is an alright CD, but it doesn't even compare to No Name Face. The only songs that even caught my attention were "Spin" and "The Sky is Falling". I was also a little bit disturbed because on the acoustic version of "The Sky is Falling", it sounds like Jason Wade had never sung in his life before. It was awful!!! Which begs the question, is Lifehouse really that...

Yes, it's catchy, but it's so much more than that. The lyrics are very emotional and thought provoking - you'll hear a song five times and analyze it differently each time. The lyrics don't have this hit you over the head obvious theme to them - they can kind of be analyzed however you want. This album is exponentially better than No Name Face both lyrically and musically. Sure, maybe the songs aren't as radio friendly as those on No Name Face, but I think that's a good thing because we get much better quality songs here. Give it a listen - if you like emotional music that makes you think, you will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars you've got the most familiar face, December 6, 2002
By
pezzettino (Quebec, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stanley Climbfall (Audio CD)
Stanley Climbfall shows more lyrical maturity than Lifehouse's freshman effort, No Name Face, but I must warn you: it took several listens to grow on me. These songs required a few days to breathe before they took on a life of their own, unlike Trying and Sick Cycle Carousel from their first release.

The album opens up with the smash radio single, Spin, a driving alterna-pop tune which eases up on the momentum for a tedious bridge before diving back into the electric guitar hooks that lend this song its edge. This is followed by Wash, a melodically monotonous song heavy on repeating some of the most uncreative lyrics of this record: "you wash over me, you wash over me like rain. you wash over me, you wash over me like sunshine." Luckily for all Lifehouse fans, the album quickly improves.

Wade leads us into Sky is Falling with understated, well-crafted opening lines, and all is well with the world. Anchor turns up the intensity with an electric introduction, easing the listener between melodic channels and an athemic chorus, while the verses of Am I Ever Gonna Find Out stand out as an album highlight. Title track Stanley Climbfall abandons the usual Lifehouse formula to experiment in gently flowing, melancholy leads, a dreamy chorus, and the playful tweaking of "stand, climb, and fall" to bring us the record's protagonist, oddly-named everyman Stanley. Fans in a subdued mood will be hard-pressed to avoid singing along on the "da da das" before Out of Breath returns them to more familiar Lifehouse territory.

Just Another Name is a personal favorite, starting with a kicky rhythm guitar before bringing in the rest of the band on this tribute to the artificiality of the social games of popularity and fame. "Which mask will you wear today?" Wade inquires. "Everybody knows your name, but they don't know whho you are." In the hands of others, this song could become a melancholy rejection of the world, but Lifehouse turns it into an atypical but highly enjoyable up-tempo track.

Take Me Away reintroduces the lush guitar arrangements that have become the band's calling card on the radio circuit, granting die-hard No Name Face fans a breath of their old Lifehouse before the European influences of My Precious and the humdrum verses and uplifting chorus of Empty Space. Space gruadually unwinds the tension before the album's lullabye, The Beginning. Bonus tracks How Long and an acoustic version of Sky Is Falling close out the record.

All in all, Stanley Climbfall is good, well-crafted, and cunningly produced. It isn't another No Name Face, but it wasn't meant to be. It has an artistic vision all its own. Still, the unremarkability of Wash, Empty Space, and certain parts of other tracks bring it down to four stars. Quite the respectable sophomore release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Would give it 7 stars if possible, January 2, 2003

This review is from: Stanley Climbfall (Audio CD)
I knew it would take a monster effort from Lifehouse to follow up 'No Name Face' so I was a little reluctant to jump right in and buy this one. It didn't take long to realize that 'Stanley Climbfall' is not only better than the band's first release, but it has quickly moved past Creed, Nickelback, and 3 Doors Down to the top of my personal playlist. Every CD that I own has at least one or two tracks that I would consider mediocre at best and skip as I was listening, but not on 'Stanley'. Every track has a unique hook, from the sure-to-be radio hits 'Spin' and 'Out of Breath' to the addicting 'Just Another Name'.

Here's how I rate each song:
1. Spin - 8.5/10
2. Wash - 8.0/10
3. Sky Is Falling - 9.0/10 - Addictive, you will be humming this one all day.
4. Anchor - 8.5/10
5. Am I Ever Gonna Find Out - 9.5/10
6. Stanley Climbfall - 9.0/10 - Slower, great lyrics.
7. Out of Breath - 9.0/10 - Sure radio hit, awesome beat.
8. Just Another Name - 10.0/10 - This one is so different from anything Lifehouse has done, I think you'll either love it or skip it. The guitar-tamborine combo at the start sets the tone before the drum kicks in. It's the best song I've heard from any band in a long long time.
9. Take Me Away - 8.5/10
10. My Precious - 8.0/10
11. Empty Space - 8.0/10
12. The Beginning - 8.5/10 - Very U2 sounding, adds a new dimension to the band.
13. How Long - 8.0/10
14. Sky Is Falling (acoustic) - 9.0/10 - Excellent acoustic version of track 3. Could have been released either way, good decision to release as a bonus track.

If you are a fan of 'No Name Face', you cannot go wrong with 'Stanley Climbfall'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lifehouse ReStrikes those Chords, September 19, 2002
This review is from: Stanley Climbfall (Audio CD)
Lifehouse has literally struck the chords of my life again with their new cd, Stanley Climbfall. The lyrics in every song relate to life in every way and for every person. Wade's voice is perfect for the words he sings, and for the instrumentals in the background.

Stanley Climbfall has 12 new songs from Lifehouse that I instantly began to favor. Although some more than others, I am sure to come around to the songs I've yet to listen to a lot. My favorites right now are Spin, Out of Breath, Just Another Name, Take Me Away, Precious, and Am I Ever Gonna Find Out.

Just like No Name Face, Stanley Climbfall has soft, meaningful ballads; songs that make you happy with life; and power songs that speak meaningful truth. Lifehouse has now proven they're here to stay with this great, great cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting, powerful and beautiful..., December 22, 2003

JOHN MICHAEL SAIZ (Pacifica, California United States) - See all my reviews

"Stanley Climbfall" is more than just a great album. In my opinion, it far surpasses "No Name Face" simply because of it's radiant, emotional lyrics that still send chills down my back 2 years after it was released. I've owned the album since October 2002 and this is such a wonderful work of art. Lots of work and feeling was put into the 14 songs of Stanley Climbfall. I have introduced Lifehouse to so many of my friends and they all love them. Whether you're a rock, rap, hip-hop or any other kind of music fan, "Stanley Climbfall " is a must have. Hear them, feel them and enjoy them.

Spin-This is one of the most up-beat and fast paced songs on the album. It turns a bad mood into a good one. 10/10

Wash-The drum-work in this song seems to show itself a little more than the rest of the album. 10/10

Sky Is Falling-One of the most haunting but beautiful tracks on the cd.
10/10

Anchor-Anchor gets my adrenaline pumping with its harmoneous, non-stop alternative rock. 10/10

Am I Ever Going To Find Out-This song makes me think about what it is that I am looking for in life and if I ever going to find what it is that i'm looking for. 9/10

Stanley Climbfall-In life, we all stand, climb, fall and get back up again. This song explains it all. 9/10

Out of Breath-This song is one of their harder songs but in the same, it is very emotional and gives me chills when I hear it. 10/10

Just Another Name-This song is kind of hard to follow. Nevertheless, it has a great beat and good lyrics. 8/10

Take Me Away-This is one of their best rock songs on the CD. It gives hope to all of us wanting to get away and leave our past lives behind. 10/10

The rest of the music on the album are all 10/10s. In my opinion, the second half of Stanley Climbfall gets more powerful and beautiful. I recommend "Stanley Climbfall," by Lifehouse to everyone that appreciates great, real music...

5.0 out of 5 stars Lifehouse still stands tall with Stanley Climbfall, March 9, 2003
This review is from: Stanley Climbfall (Audio CD)
I was so skeptical of this one. I think NNF is one of the most amazing albums I own, and I didn't think they could even come close to touching that one. Well they did fall short a little teeny bit (none of these songs even come close to "Everything"), but overall this album is still incredible. I'll break it down track by track:

1. SPIN- this was the first single. I really like the song a lot, it's catchy and has a hard edge. But for some reason the lyrics remind me of "Hanging By A Moment" a lot...
2. WASH- I like this one. The lyrics are great and it's just a really amazing guitar-driven song.
3. SKY IS FALLING- This is the first song on the album that jumped out at me when I listened to it for the first time. Perfect, soft, melodic rock.
4. ANCHOR- This song is really interesting. It has a very soft, winding kinda feel. "I stand with a blank expression now / And I can't believe myself"
5. AM I EVER GONNA FIND OUT- The song on the record with the hardest edge. Great, upbeat song.
6. STANLEY CLIMBFALL- Ah, the title track. This is probably my favorite song on the album. It builds you up and brings you back down. And the lyrics really make you think.
7. OUT OF BREATH- This is another great song with lots of energy and awesome drum work.
8. JUST ANOTHER NAME- For some reason this song makes me want to tap dance... and I really have no idea why. Midtempo.
9. TAKE ME AWAY- I am so in love with the beginning of this song: "This time / All I want is you / There is no one else / Who can ever take your place."
10. MY PRECIOUS- A nice ballad. So much emotion.
11. EMPTY SPACE- This is my second favorite. The chorus is amazing. You need to hear this song!
12. THE BEGINNING- This is actually the perfect ending for this album. A "billow-y" ballad.

Overall, I don't think you can go wrong with this one. Jason Wade has such an emotional voice and such a talent for writing. You need this record!

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Stanley' Climbs to the Top!, October 1, 2002
By
Emily (Blacksburg, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stanley Climbfall (Audio CD)
Lifehouse's sophomore effort, oddly-titled Stanley Climbfall, proves this band goes far beyond the realm of one-hit wonders. After the double platinum success of their debut album No Name Face, mostly due to the sensational popularity of the first single "Hanging By A Moment," which became the Most Spun Song of 2001, many critics speculated that the band's 15 minutes of fame were over. After a listen to Stanley, every hasty critic will be eating his/her words!

This album's clear evolution from its predecessor makes evident the lack of anxiety Lifehouse felt about creating another "Hanging." Lead singer/songwriter Jason Wade, along with bassist Sergio Andrade and drummer Rick Woolstenhulme, kept the focus off the past and on the future during the album's creation, concentrating less on another radio-friendly hit and more on staying true to the music. This is obvious in tracks like "Wash," a complete masterpiece of ingenuity. The album's title track is a melodic winding road of soothing harmony and vocal prowess.

Admittedly influenced by such brit-rockers as U2, Coldplay, and Radiohead, Lifehouse has carved out their own sound in a genre of copycats. Songs like "My Precious" showcase this new European influence, while tracks like "Take Me Away" and the first single "Spin" incorporate driving guitar rhythm with soul-searching lyrics. Wade's spiritual influences produce epics like "Empty Space," "Anchor," and "The Beginning" - quite probably the best ending for a record in years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lifehouse asserts itself with "Stanley Climbfall", June 5, 2003
By
Mike (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stanley Climbfall (Audio CD)
The boys of Lifehouse were left with quite a daunting task when they began recording their second album, the follow up to the multi-platinum debut "No Name Face" which included the most played song of the year 2001, "Hanging By A Moment." Lead singer Jason Wade penned most of the tunes for "Stanley" on the tourbus between shows. The result is a finely crafted piece of rock and roll melted together with dashes of adult contemporary and pop music. The cd plays out like this:

1. Spin- 8/10 rating
First single off the album. A catchy tune with a rockin hook but one could do without the singing during the bridge and the lengthy instrumental at the end of the song that the radio cuts out.

2. Wash- 7/10 rating
A solid tune that starts out with a distorted guitar and builds up to a catchy chorus.

3. Sky Is Falling- 8/10 rating
Very melodic and beautiful song.

4. Anchor- 6/10 rating
This song is good, but one can become lost in the chorus when Wade becomes very difficult to understand, not one of the best songs on the album.

5. Am I Ever Gonna Find Out- 7/10 rating
A forceful song that ends as quickly as it begins. A new sound for Lifehouse on this song, and a good one at that.

6. Stanley Climbfall- 10/10 rating
A beautiful ballad, this song is flawless both musically and lyrically. Possibly the best song on the album.

7. Out Of Breath- 8/10 rating
Similar to the smash "Hanging By a Moment" as far as tempo is concerned, this is another catchy rock tune from the boys.

8. Just Another Name- 6/10 rating
Not one of the best songs on the album, this mid-tempo tune loses the listener in the boring chorus.

9. Take Me Away- 10/10 rating
The second single off the album, this is another masterpiece from Lifehouse. Rivals "Stanley Climbfall" as the best track on the cd.

10. My Precious- 6/10 rating
A dull song that Wade wrote in a similar way to "Hanging By a Moment" where he wrote it during the recording of this album. Too bad the result of this song wasn't as successful.

11. Empty Space- 9/10 rating
Beautiful ballad with wonderful lyrics.

12. The Beginning- 9/10 rating
Another wonderful song that builds up to a strong bridge.

13. How Long- 9/10 rating
A great bonus song about the 9/11 attacks, this song shows off the emotinal side of Lifehouse.

14. Sky Is Falling (Acoustic)- 8/10 rating
Great rendition of a great song

Overall, this is a marvelous cd from the boys of Lifehouse. Although they may not garner as much airplay with any of these songs as they did with the freakishly popular smash "Hanging by a Moment," this cd will get its share of radio hits and will help further the career of these talented musicians.

4.0 out of 5 stars Days of Our Nights, October 1, 2002
By
Allison (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stanley Climbfall (Audio CD)
Stanley Climbfall, the sophomore release by Lifehouse, is both a bumped up and broken down version of their debut, No Name Face. Stanley Climbfall is full of funky beats and grooves that catch your ear and pull you into the CD, making you want more. The first song, and first single, Spin is a song that grabs you with the chorus and drags you along, `while the world keeps spinning round.'

Personally I think one of the best tracks on the album is `Anchor.' I remember hearing this song when I saw Lifehouse live on September 1st at the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle. The song has a slow driving beat that's punctuated by the raucous chorus and a simple guitar solo that plows up a chromatic scale. To contrast the slow melody throughout the song the cutoff is abrupt.

Track six, the title track, is derived from the line Stand, Climb, and Fall. This song is a slow ballad-like lullaby that instantly pulled me in with a simple guitar riff. The lyrics are really what make this song, my favorite line being `am I only melting these diamonds in the making.'

Another highlight on the disc is a song called `Take Me Away.' It's faintly reminiscent of `Hanging by a Moment' because of the steady guitar and driving beats, building up to an irresistible chorus.

Lastly, if you are lucky enough to purchase the disc early you'll get two bonus tracks: `How Long' and an acoustic version of `Sky Is Falling' an earlier track on the disc.

The bottom line is the disc is perfect if you want to kick back and listen to some good acoustic rock music. The combination of Jason's vocals and guitar, Sergio's bass licks, and Rick's solid drumming all come together to make this sophomore effort a perfect follow-up, even though other critics may think differently.

Lifehouse is beyond spectacular. I haven't stopped listening to it since it came out on September 17th.
Highlights of the CD:
Spin, Out of Breath and Take Me Away. Those are just the ones that really stand out. The whole CD from beginning to end is superb. This will be in my CD player for a while.
