  • The sextant is 9 3/8 inches (23.8 cm) wide, 9 inches (22.9 cm) tall, 5 1/4 inches (13.3 cm) deep.
  • The sextant case measures13 inches (33 cm) wide, 10 1/2 inches (26.7 cm) deep, 6 1/4 inches (15.9 cm) tall.

Product Description

The Stanley London Mark 3 Sextant represents the best quality marine sextant on the market for the price. This is not a reproduction, but an accurate and calibrated fully functional nautical sextant for marine navigation. There is a very minor sacrifice in potential accuracy (+/- 20 arcseconds throughout the arc, compared with +/- 10 to 12 arcseconds), which is inconsequential compared to the human error when taking sights from a moving small vessel. This Mark 3 is actually used by many professional navigators. The Mark 3 sextant has revolutionized celestial navigation: Never before has such a high-quality, accurate metal sextant been available at such a low price. The sextant's full 50 mm mirrors and shade glass are precisely machined and extensively tested for flatness using the Fresnel diffraction pattern method. The Mark 3 sextant's LED lighting of the arc and drum allows for convenient night sights. Two standard AA batteries fit in the sextant's handle (batteries not included), and a convenient thumb switch controls the lighting. The 3.5 x 40 scope has fully coated optics and a large 40 mm objective lens to yield a sharp 3.5-power non-inverted (upright) image. The sextant comes with a beautiful, high quality hinged hardwood case to store and protect the instrument. This sextant has a unique serial number and is fully functional and factory calibrated for navigation.

(This review is written to suggest that caution should be
exercised before committing to a purchase of this product.)

While the ' Stanley London Mark 3 Sextant ' looks just like
the Celestaire Astra IIIb (exactly the same price is being
asked at the time this review is being written) there are
at least three significant differences :

1.) The weight is off by 2 ounces

2.) The part number visible (with difficulty) on the
arc scale differs from what is shown on the Astra IIIb

3.) Stanley London says :
" Stanley London does not accept returns on this sextant. "

When I asked Stanley London :

" Are these sextants the same as the Astra IIIB
or are they different ? "

The answer I received was :

" I believe the two models are pretty much the same.
I can not see any noticeable difference in the two
models and the specifications are almost identical. "

To me that response seems less direct than I would have
expected given that the price being asked is identical
to that currently listed on Celestaire's Web Page for
the Astra IIIb and given that Stanley London's offering
looks (to my eye) to be identical to the Astra IIIb.

I am left wondering if Stanley London's offering is for
sextants that didn't pass some final quality control
inspection for what would otherwise have been sold as
Astra IIIbs ?

Given the price being asked and that Stanley London
states that they won't accept returns, I cannot see
any reason to purchase this product when the Astra
IIIb is available for the same price, is sold as a
marine sextant, and Celestaire offers a 30 day
return period.

Verified Purchase
Stanley is one of the nest company's I have ever bought from online.
Everything with the order was perfect as well as their product.

Even after realising that I didn't need the sextant I bought from them they were fantastic in allowing me to return the product.
