For about the same price as the Stanley you can buy a modern Veritas Large Shoulder Plane. For very little more, you can buy a Lie-Nielsen Large Shoulder plane. Either of those two puts the Stanley to shame when it comes to accuracy, fit, finish, ergonomics and for that matter, looks.

The 93 is an "improved" copy of the original Stanley in that they've changed the shape somewhat. But while Stanley is to be lauded for trying to re-establish their name as a maker of high-quality planes, this one just isn't competitive with the competition. But Stanley's No. 92 is a good deal, if you find a good one, at less than half of the cost of a Veritas Medium if you buy it at Amazon.

I got this for my father for his birthday - he's tough to buy for, and loves tools. For the price, I was kind of expecting a BIG tool - like a foot long at least, but in fact, this is quite small. When I opened the box, I was kind of disappointed because I thought it was too small BUT when I gave this to my Dad, his eyes just lit up and he was SO happy! Apparently, if it was bigger it would not serve its purpose of getting into small corners. The tool was very heavy and obviously really well made. My Dad absolutely loved it and it was one of the most successful gifts I've ever gotten him! So, if you're gifting this, don't be put off by the small size - it's supposed to be that way!
