This review is from: Stanley's Party (Hardcover)
Stanleys party is a wonderfully written and illustrated book. It is suppose to be for kids, but many an adult will break out in smiles and giggles over it. Stanley the dog, starts by breaking one little rule in life - don't get on the couch - and graduates to shattering all the house rules. In the process he discovers the joys of new experiences, and new skills like dancing, dining, and entertaining new friends - all without the knowlege of his people. Until the day when things get out of hand..... The book is hysterically funny and guaranteed to bring a smile to almost everyones face - dog owner or not.

Extremely funny, but no lesson,

Stanley has been a very good dog, but one night, as he waits for his owners to come home, he realizes that without them there, he can sleep on the couch. It works out quite well, and soon he graduates to bigger and better fun. But, when his people come home early one night, the fun comes to an end...sort of.
OK, this is an interesting book. It is well illustrated, and a lot of fun. My five-year-old daughter loved watching Stanley dance the night away. What was the lesson that this book taught? Well, I suppose none, Stanley didn't get into much trouble, and he actually liked his punishment. So, if you want a good lesson in a kids' book, you will probably be disappointed. But, if you want a good, extremely funny book, one that is sure to please your little reader, then get this book.

This is an absolutely wonderful children's book -- and I don't even have children! I bought one for myself, and another for my brother (who has no children, either). The illustrations are so charming and funny, and the text is laugh-out-old funny at points. Kids -- and grownups -- will love this book!

We are a dog family so we love stories about dogs. The plot is cute about all the things your dog might do while you are away. Illustrations are whimsical. My daughter likes it, I liked it alot.

PARTY ANIMAL,
By Dancing Man (Atlanta, GA, USA) - See all my reviews

Stanley reminds me of every dog i've ever had or ever known. In fact there is a little of his mischievousness in me. The story line flows evenly though out the book and the artwork is outstanding. Where he is dancing is my favorite. One depiction looks like one of our dogs sleeping, another looks like me trying to dance and the third like my wife,...we wont go there. A previous reviewer complained about the predictable outcome. This is a children's book and about dogs, if you want a suprise ending why buy any book?
All in all, this dog gives it five big paws up.

Dog's Just Want to Have Fun!,

This review is from: Stanley's Party (Paperback)
Stanley's humans head out nightly allowing their dog a fast ride down the slippery slope of the good life. Before he knows it, a little relaxing on the forbidden couch while listening to the stereo has become the canine party of the century. Humorous, engaging, and illustrated to capture the personalities of doggies from all sides of the park, this tale is packed with chuckles and is great for read alouds to young animal-lovers everywhere.

For the inner and outer child,

Okay, I confess it: I bought this book for myself. A grown woman, I left a class of advanced students writing about the concept of hierarchy in The Iliad and went to the elementary school book fair to get some books for my inner child. And I couldn't resist the cover of "Stanley's Party." There was Stanley doing the Twist and having the time of his life. Food littered the floor. A canine wearing a lampshade tried to keep up with him. Another guest hung from a ceiling light, and others danced through the house in a wild and wooly conga line. How could a serious reader be expected to resist such a book? My inner child didn't even have to whine. I bought it on the spot. The next hour I read it to my class of seniors. I explained that Stanley was a good example of someone who had lost sight of hierarchical order. Like Agamemnon, only with fewer bad results. I had no grandchildren at the time, but I read the book to my husband. Together we admired the sundry guests at the party. Later, I read it to a granddaughter who laughed out loud at Stanley's guests and their revelry. And I'm back to order copies for a friend who needs to entertain her own inner child. I don't know how many copies I've purchased for others, but a lot. And every recipient---child, adolescent, and adult---has been cheered by his or her romp with Stanley and his companions. This is a book for children trained to be courteous, to obey their parents and say yes M'am and yes sir, and to eat without spilling food onto the tablecloth. It is a book for children who must take naps in the afternoon and pick up their toys at the end of the day. It will feed their inner children, the ones who have been supressed for the sake of civilization. It will make them laugh and look at life differently. Their imaginations will be nourished and their souls enlarged. And if their parents tip-toe into the rooms of their napping offspring and observe a sliver of pink tongue curling out of a pair of smiling lips, they can be glad that have sowed the seeds of wonderful and lasting dreams in another mind. Had Agamemnon's parents read him such a book as this one, he might have been a little looser and a lot nicer to Achilles, and that would have saved a lot of pain and suffering. If you and your inner child do not enjoy this book and discover new things in its pages each time you pick it up, call your minister, priest, rabbi, or psychiatrist and report your condition. But no matter: you will enjoy it.

Stanley is bored when his family goes out, so he tries sitting on the couch. Nothing happens so he does a little more each night until he finally invites all the other dogs in for a party. It's a wild and crazy party, until his people come home! Preschoolers think this is pretty funny, and my grandchildren love thinking of my dog getting ideas from the book. I gave a copy to my 2 year old grandson after he and his family dog sat. Great book!

One of the most hilarious books I've read (to kids)...the illustrations and script show great understanding of the way dogs actually think. I just may name my next dog Stanley!

Stanley succumbs to temptation by inches,
This review is from: Stanley's Party (Paperback)
Absolutely delightful book. My grandson and I got a copy at the library and we both loved it! The illustrations are so expressive of doggy feelings. I recognize my mom's old beagle in this! That old dog could open the refrigerator the same way! We decided we had to buy a copy to keep. It is that good.
