4.0 out of 5 stars Stans works. Watch the Stans videos
After putting up with flats and the extra weight, I took the plunge and bought Stan's conversion kit along with two new tubeless mountain bike tires. I also watched Stans videos as well as several others on youtube a couple of times each. 1.0 out of 5 stars Not as easy as they make out and they don't stand behind product, August 5, 2011
This review is from: Stans NoTubes Tubeless Bicycle Tire System (Misc.)
I bought the Stan's kit together with 2 additional rim strips and a syringe to convert 4 wheels I had. I checked their website and all wheels (2 Bontrager tubeless compatibles and 2 regular Mavic wheels) were listed and gave recommendations.

I read the instructions (they are brief) and also watched the online video multiple times. However when I tried my install I wasn't getting any air to stay in any tyre - all air came straight back out at the valve stem. I removed the tires and saw the rimstrips didn't seem right. I took pictures and emailed Stan's. The response back was odd in that it quoted the wrong wheels, but it assured me the sealant would do the job.

Tried 4 times and only 1 wheel took air - the other 3 leaked all the sealant where the air was rushing out and never sealed it. I tried for hours. And the one that did take air, leaked it out overnight and was flat in the morning.

I've since emailed Stan's twice more. I politely asked for more help or perhaps a refund. I've never received a reply from either.

So I've spent close to $100 on their products, have no tubeless wheels, have had 33% response to my emails and the 1 response was crap.

Can I recommend tubeless tires - I'd love to tell you.
Can I recommend StansNoTubes - not even to my enemies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stans works. Watch the Stans videos, May 1, 2010
This review is from: Stans NoTubes Tubeless Bicycle Tire System (Misc.)
After putting up with flats and the extra weight, I took the plunge and bought Stan's conversion kit along with two new tubeless mountain bike tires. I also watched Stans videos as well as several others on youtube a couple of times each. I considered buying tubeless rims, but given the price and that I'm a weekend warrior at best, it seemed a little much. Instead I learned to subtleties of tubed to tubeless conversion and got a little dirty.

The rim strip, that looks like an inner tube except it's just a flat strip, would not allow me to put on the tubeless tires. With the rim strip I was able to use my old tubed tires, but the weaker sidewall compared to the tubeless ones [which have fairly uniform thickness through the tire] had me nervous. To get a seal soap suds are needed as shown in the video, to seal between the tire and the wheel as well as make visible leaks, as well as a high air volume floor pump or compressed air [the one at the gas station worked for me]. Once you've gotten to the "Stans goop in the tire" point it needs to be sloshed back and forth as shown in the video and allowed to sit flat for several minutes on both sides to seal the side walls since once the wheel is vertical there's not goop up against the sidewalls. Any tear in the sidewall will render a tubed tire unusable for conversion for tubeless.

To get the tubeless tires on my rims I found that by not using the rim strip and removing the thin tape covering spoke nipples, cleaning the inner surface as shown on a Stans video, the rim tape allowed me to seal the holes and a stans valve stem sealed the stem hole. With this slightly smaller amount of material in the wheel groove I was FINALLY able to get the tubeless tire on my none-tubeless wheel and seal it with air.

In short for tubeless tires on tubed rims use ONLY rim tape.

For tubed tires use the rim strip.

Watch the videos.

My now tubeless wheels are much lighter that they used to be.

Good Luck and Good Riding.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible product, October 15, 2011

This conversion kit sucks ass. I made sure everything was compatable and i used brand new tires but after 4 hours of fiddling around with the kit I ran out of sealant. This is a ripoff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, July 25, 2011

This review is from: Stans NoTubes Tubeless Bicycle Tire System (Misc.)
I'm a weekend warrior with a fairly light dual suspension bike (Specialized Enduro S-works), but had been using some pretty heavy tubes (Slime thorn tubes) that weigh almost 2 lbs each, plus one extra in my pack, for about 6 lbs of extra weight.

When I heard about Stan's conversion allowing you to use standard rims & tires and go tubeless, I was skeptical and didn't check into it. Recently, however, on the recommendation of friend I went ahead and took the plunge, and I can honestly say that Stan's WORKS. Plus, after dispensing with all the extra tube weight, my bike handles SO much better and I can bunny hop the bike like never before.

You will want to pay close attention to the instructions, as there is definitely a process to making the conversion and you don't want to cut any corners. There is a helpful video and other information on Stan's website that is also worth checking out before you start. It is very helpful to have a compressor rather than relying upon a hand pump to seal the tires against the rim.

Something I didn't realize until I bought the kit was that the MAXIMUM pressure you can use with this system is 40lbs on a mountain bike tire. For most people that's not an issue, but if you ride your bike on the street and put higher pressure in it, you won't be able to do that with Stan's. For me, 40lbs is plenty of pressure and tires glide over rocky trails very well.

One other tip - the sealant doesn't last forever and you will need to renew it at least once a year with fresh fluid to keep the tires sealing well.

Overall, I highly recommend this product!

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of $$$ DO NOT PURCHASE, June 20, 2011

I bought the product to use w/standard tires. It DOES NOT WORK. Tiny leaks on the side walls will not seal. Just buy Slime tubes & save your cash and sacrifice the weight.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rim tape works better, January 17, 2012

With rim tape, Stans No Tubes are awesome. Rock gardens, thorn bushes and sand spurs, and made it. Rode with multiple sand spurs in my tires, pulled them out, spun the wheel and pumped them up some and went riding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Consider a professional installation, September 9, 2011

This review is from: Stans NoTubes Tubeless Bicycle Tire System (Misc.)
For those who attempt to follow the instructions and spend hours doing the install. IF YOU FAIL, IT'S NOT THE FAULT OF THE PRODUCT. Not all tires are tubeless ready.

I had my local bike store do mine. I'm down with changing components and performing maintenance on my 2012 Rockhopper 29er but I heard the stans conversion can be a little tricky.

Running a 29er Specialized Purgatory Control 2bliss 2.30 front. 29er Specialized Captain Control 2bliss 2.0 rear.

I have about 40 miles running Stans and I love it! I live in Socal: desert thorn country so after picking up about 20 goathead thorns in the front tire, I pulled out each one and only a few bled out a little slime. Sealed in 5 - 10 seconds. the same pressure I ran 3 weeks ago has held. I only add air for a street commute.

I LOVE STANS and will never go back to tubes!!

Works as described and as advertised. Just need to follow instuctions and don't skip steps. So far the tires (without tubes) on my MTB are holding up great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stans no tube, July 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Took me awhile to get it all set up and working, but now I really love having less pressure & much better traction. I also lost 5oz per wheel, so that's something.

Follow directions. It's very important to seal the bead by putting the wheel and tire in the horizontal plane.
