Product Description

Stant locking gas caps are OEM quality both in construction and materials as well as deterrent to fuel theft and vandalism. A gas/fuel cap performs three very important functions; safety of the vehicle's occupants, fuel economy and reduce emissions. Safety: Without a fuel cap, gasoline vapors will be present around your car at all times. Those vapors can be ignited by a random spark or flame and are very dangerous if you are involved in an accident or rollover. Fuel Economy: According to Sun Oil Company research, a vehicle with a missing or inoperative fuel cap will allow 176 pounds (22 gallons) of gasoline to evaporate over the period of one year. Emissions: Gasoline vapors emit hydrocarbons which dissolve the earth's ozone layer and cause smog.

This Cap is for the 2005 Chevy Silverado Extended Cab 2WD.

There are two separate fuel cap designs that GM made for this truck. One has a threaded neck and one does not have a threaded neck. You have to look at the original fuel cap that came with your truck. My truck originally came with a non locking non threaded fuel cap from the factory. So I replaced it with the Stant 10511 locking fuel cap. You cannot find these anywhere! Pepboys, Kragen, Autozone etc! I found it on Amazon finally! It is a quality locking fuel cap. Do not buy Fram fuel caps as they cause your check engine light to come on!

I purchased this locking fuel cap for my 2008 Chevy Tahoe and it fits perfectly with no problems. Easily installed in minutes. I was able to install with original plastic tether.

I ordered this as well as the Motorad locking cap for my truck for comparison's sake. Well, the first Stant locking cap I received from Amazon did not actually lock. The locking mechanism was apparently broken. Now bear in mind that I had no trouble with the other locking cap AND I've had plenty of locking gas caps in the past, from various manufacturers, and never had any trouble with them, either. I can say that the key in this first one did, in fact, turn 90-degrees stop to stop, but it seemingly had no effect on the cap whatsoever. I tried this both with the cap on the fuel filler tube as well as by hand. It worked neither place, though it did fit my truck perfectly well.

Of note, the "instructions" for the cap are actually printed on the cap itself, though strangely not on the box. It's a strange mechanism, but I suppose it works. To "lock" the cap, just put the cap on the filler tube and tighten until it clicks three times. No key necessary (a plus compared to most locking gas caps). At this point, the cap spins freely to the left (unscrew) but tightens if turned to the right, only to a point before it then clicks to release the tension. To unlock, insert the key, turn counterclockwise 1/4 turn and then back, remove the key and unscrew the cap.

None of this, of course, worked on the first cap I received. So I asked Amazon to swap it out for me, and they did (quickly and painlessly, thanks Amazon!).

The second cap worked as it is supposed to. The moral to this story is that quality control is critical, especially on a locking cap. This does, in fact, make me a little nervous about using this cap long term. We'll see.

Anyway, this cap is going on a 2008 GMC Sierra Denali. Note that you MUST make sure you have the right cap for the application.

This was a good locking gas cap that I am using for my Chevy Cobalt SS/SC. It is a little hard to wiggle it off all the time otherwise it would have been a 5 star. Great price great product.

I wish they had identified the top or bottom of the key slot or they could have used a double sided key, since the key isn't guided into the lock very well it's always a bit of a pain to figure out which end is up.

Another thing that would help, would be some kind of retainer, even if it didn't exactly match the original, at least some kind of lanyard attachment so I didn't have to worry about losing my new gas cap.

At least the fit and function are close to the original cap, just slightly loose.

With gas prices well over the $4.00 mark and news reports of gas thefts rising in record numbers on personal, government, rental, farming, and airline vehicles, this investment has provided peace of mind from the day it was received in the mail.

If you listen to critics, they will tell you that this is a deterrent that is a waste of money, because thieves will still find a way to siphon gas from an automobile by drilling underneath a gas tank, and taking the gas that way. Well, be that as it may, why not make it a little harder for the thief to hit your car?

By not buying a locking gas cap, it's kind of like a person reasoning that it's a waste of time to lock the front door to your home, because if a thief is going to come in and take your belongings, why make it hard for them?

I would trust no other brand of locking gas caps other than Stant, and would advise other car owners to look into purchasing one for each of their vehicles in the near future.

I tried this locking gas cap on my 07 Chevy Colorado and it set an engine right away....same code as if the gas cap would have been left off. The treading of the cap looks quite different than the stock cap and it does not appear to get a good connection of the filler neck. I've used Stant locking caps on other vehicles with no problems, but this one is not worth buying for a Chevy truck.
