Works great for me,

This review is from: Staples MailMate M3 Full sheet, CD, DVD, Credit Card & Junk mail shredder (Electronics)
Based on other reviews I read, I felt the need to review this item myself.
Not only have I had this shredder for nearly 2 years, it has worked perfectly the entire time. I bought it specifically for the 12 sheet capacity and its ability to shred CD/DVDs and credit cards. The motor is really strong and hasn't showed signs of becoming weaker. I routinely shred 8 or fewer pages at a time out of habit. I had other consumer shredders that died on me and figured that I was working them too hard. So with the shredder, I cut back a bit from the max capacity and life is good.

Total Junk,

I had this shredder for about four months before it broke completely. It just stopped. As was stated in the other reviews, it works well until it breaks. But, at this price, this is hardly something you would consider as a disposable item. I would think of the single positive review currently posted as coming from someone who was just plain lucky with this item.

Works fine, until it doesn't,
This review is from: Staples MailMate M3 Full sheet, CD, DVD, Credit Card & Junk mail shredder (Electronics)
Had it for about a year, until it suddenly died. Power light comes on, but it won't accept paper, and the manual forward and reverse buttons do nothing. After reading around on the web, I found someone who commented that the electronics in the thing are poorly designed and will burn out quickly.
Won;t buy from Staples again, that's for sure.

Don't bother.,

I had this and am currently looking for a replacement because it died. I guarantee this will last you less than a year. After that: paperweight. Staples will replace it and it will die. Its a vicious cycle that is not worth the money you save. I just want something to shred my bills.

Fix it suggestion for Mailmate Shredder,
This review is from: Staples MailMate M3 Full sheet, CD, DVD, Credit Card & Junk mail shredder (Electronics)
My Staples Mailmate Shredder stopped working during heavy use. The power light would come on, but when I tried to put a piece of paper in, it wouldn't shred. The reverse light would come on, but it wouldn't go in reverse. The forward light came on when pushed at that point, but it wouldn't shred. I turned it off for over an hour and then tried again. This time it worked!
I ruined a previous Mailmate. I thought my son put too many sheets in, so I quickly squirt lubricating oil on the sheets while they were shredding, thinking it would help them go through easier. Instead, it made them stick together and jam up the machine. I got another because I liked it so much. I'm currently working on shredding 3 years of tax returns. This machine is a workhouse and I highly recommend it. Just empty it when it's full and don't put too many sheets in at a time. Give it a rest of at least 15 min. every so often during heavy use.

3 Years and then it Died,

This review is from: Staples MailMate M3 Full sheet, CD, DVD, Credit Card & Junk mail shredder (Electronics)
Lucky me, I got 3 years of use before mine died too. Useage was very light and I occasionally applied shredder lubricant to clear off the gunk that builds up on the blades. It is an attractive appliance that can sit on a counter or desk where it is convenient for gobbling up discarded mail. But after reading review after review of this shredder dying so quickly, I'll look elsewhere for a replacement.

Easy fix for your stopped Mailmate,

My wonderful Mailmate stopped working for no reason. I figured out why and fixed it in two minutes. Scraps of shredded paper accumulate on the bottom of the machine BEHIND the pullout drawer where you can't see them and keep the drawer from fully closing. The machine reads this as an error and stops working. Turn off the machine, pull out the drawer and remove it, and vacuum or otherwise remove every piece of paper from the floor of the Mailmate. Reach all the way back. I had almost a handful of scraps. Now the drawer will close properly, the blue light will come on and the machine will work. I think that this paper accumulation is at the heart of all the complaints and problems people have been having with this terrific shredder.
Pros: Much quieter than other machines. Drawer is so easy to empty and replace. See-thru drawer lets you know it's time to empty. Cons: It fills up pretty fast. It shuts off if you use it for too long a time and you have to wait quite a while for it to rest. It's heavy (only an issue if you plan to move it around a lot). All in all, the least annoying home shredder I've tried.

I'm buying another MailMate,
This review is from: Staples MailMate M3 Full sheet, CD, DVD, Credit Card & Junk mail shredder (Electronics)
I bought my MailMate M3 three years ago. I use it heavily at times or just the day's junk mail and receipts. Works very well. Messy when emptying the drawer, I usually let it go too long. I've had quite a few shredders, MailMate has lasted the longest.

i have had my MailMate shredder for over 3 years. i don't use it every day, nor do i subject to its max capacity.
it has held up just fine. if you need a small shredder for personal light duty use, this should fill your needs nicely. mine shreds plastic items such as credit cards and CDs nicely, even the occasional staple or paper clip.
