"Hard-hitting, no-nonsense answers to all the tough questions facing anyone who hopes to buy a liveaboard powerboat and head off on the cruise of a lifetime. Sid Stapleton has been there before you, and Stapleton's Powerboat Bible is a distillation of the wisdom from his thousands of blue-water miles. Don't even think of buying and outfitting a powerboat for long-term cruising until you've read this book cover to cover." - Milt Baker, founder, Bluewater Books & Charts "Sid has written a much-needed book for anyone who is buying a boat and wants to go cruising. From the Back Cover

Imagine a long voyage to exotic ports around the world--your lifelong dream fulfilled. But first, you have to find the boat that will get you there safely and comfortably. Stapleton's Powerboat Bible is the resource you need, the result of Sid Stapleton's more than thirty years as a cruising powerboater and marine journalist. It's the equivalent of talking with hundreds of experts: naval architects, boatbuilders, maintenance and repair professionals, dealers and brokers, bankers, insurance agents, plus experienced powerboat owners. In addition to cruising in his own boats, Sid has traveled thousands of miles with powerboaters all over the world, from the islands of Greece and the coast of Norway to the Galapagos Islands and Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The accumulated wisdom in this book will make your cruise a relaxing adventure instead of a nerve-racking, expensive ordeal.

With Stapleton's Powerboat Bible you get the inside track on how to confidently shop for, buy, finance, and insure the right boat--new or used--for you. From GPS receivers to water makers, stabilizers to satellite phones, and anchors to medical kits, this comprehensive reference supplies expert advice on all the equipment you need, including frank appraisals of major makes and models.

Stapleton's Powerboat Bible also provides you with a wealth of information on inshore and offshore boat handling and seamanship, under all conditions. From navigation and performing repairs to handling virtually every type of emergency situation that can arise at sea, you get practical, no-nonsense information that can maximize your cruising experience.

If your cruise takes you into foreign waters, Stapleton's Powerboat Bible tells you what you need to know about dealing with unfamiliar systems and customs, including tips on regulations for flags and running lights and finding the best currency exchange rates.

Stapleton's Powerboat Bible will help you select, outfit, and operate the yacht best suited to your lifestyle and cruising plans. So make your plans, get out on the water, and live your dream.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally what I've been looking for in a book!!!!, September 7, 2004
By
Stein Smith (Emmaus, PA, USA) - See all my reviews
Sid Stapleton has written the book I've been looking for. Sid goes through all the required equipment you need for off coastal cruising and doesn't hestitate to give his opinion. He doesn't forget a thing. Everything from negoiating for the best vessel to what equipment is overkill.
This book is definately not for people looking to stay near coastal and cruise on weekends. This book lays out everything you would need to live on a powerboat for weeks, if not, months at a time. Besides Sid's excellent experience, he is a great writer and made this book so addictive I couldn't put it down. For those out there curious on what it takes to cruise continent to continent or what kind of budget it takes to live the ultimate lifestyle, read this book. A+!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid book; packed with practicalities, November 17, 2006
This was the first book on powerboating I found in the bookstore. The type of boat he favors is much much too expensive to operate for someone of my limited means, though such craft can also be used as world cruisers if you are rich enough and don't mind stopping often for fuel and repairs. He seems to prefer the full on paranoia and modern comfort approach: boats that go fast and have all modern ameneties (air conditioning hot and cold running, satellite TV, radar, sonar, etc etc etc). Beyond this,he does explain the different powerboat arrangements possible, and gives instructions on everything from selecting specific doodads, to navigation, to legality in foreign waters, to boat handling, to radio management to tying knots. Good stuff: if I get a boat, this book goes with it. Amusingly, looking at the boats available in the dealerships, and in use in the marinas, his style seems to be the most popular one for power cruisers. Possibly because it represents a compromise between long range cruising ability, and weekend cruising ability.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very complete book, January 6, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
We are new to boating (previously an active private pilot and airplane owner) and purchased a small coastal trawler. The experienced instructor at the dealer where we bought our boat highly recomended this title. It contains a wealth of information for any boat owner, even those not planning long distance cruising. It has advise on a wide range of topics - equipment, spare parts, navigation, tools, first aid, flooding, fire, rescue and more. I found it to be much more informative than the Idiots guide type of books and was written based on a lot of experience of the author and his friends. I highly recomend this book even if you will not be undertaking long distance blue water voyages. I plan to keep it on-board as a refresher to read while relaxing.
