PreS–A mother and child play, cuddle, eat, and call dad at the office. At the end of the day, baby is asleep, with both parents smiling by his bed. Words carefully follow the action on each page. The steady rhythm makes the story fun to read aloud. Phone, baby/Talk, baby/Laugh, baby/Look. Read, baby/Clap, baby/More, baby/Book. The acrylic artwork is stylized to accentuate the soft, rounded shapes. The effect is sometimes comforting, sometimes cutesy. It also distorts the figures. Some of these distortions are whimsical and appropriate, but others are less effective. Overall, the book is a sweet read to share one-on-one. PreS. There are many good-night books, but this is a chipper wake-up volume. A chubby little baby is awakened by his equally plump mother, who greets him, "Hi, baby / Up, baby / Sun, baby / Shine . . . Smile, baby / Laugh, baby / Hug, baby / Mine." Using this simple rhyme scheme, the book follows baby and mother throughout the day, always involved in very babylike activities--counting toes, playing peekaboo, lunching, burping, rocking, swinging, and calling Daddy at work. Sometimes the child appears to be a baby; when dressed, he seems more like a toddler. But it's great that Kono offers characters who look like real people. She sets mother and child against spaces that seem to curve and roll, an impression of movement that works well with the up-and-down rhyme. Fun for babies to listen to and for mothers to read. Star Baby is outstanding. It's another from Margaret O'Hair that delights my daughters. They fell in love with O'Hair's writing in Twin to Twin (which you should also check out. It's adorable!) and are thrilled to have this one. O'Hair has a style all her own. A way of rhyming that is unique, lyrical, and irresistible. The story is bouncy and bright about a baby going through a full day. It captures a typical day in the life of a baby and shows their curious nature. It's cheerful and peppy and your child will want to hear it again and again. It's also fun to read for parents. For example, "Hide baby, Seek baby, Peek baby, boo" and "Swing baby, Swoosh baby, Soar baby, High" are two wonderful pages. There's an added bonus to this book. When you think your child has outgrown it, keep it anyway. This is one of the first books my children could read independently. The rhyme amd repitition along with pages that only have a few words on them help boost confidence for children learning to read. It made them want to read more. So we got "My Pup" by O'Hair and loved that one too! Perhaps the real "Star" here is O'Hair herself!

This book will always have a special place in my heart as the first book that both our boys enjoyed. The rhyme scheme is catchy enough to keep our 7 month old from eating the book (as he does with his others) and the story is familiar and funny enough ("Wait baby/Wait baby/Wait baby/No!") to entertain our 2.5 year old.
