5.0 out of 5 stars Title may be incorrect..., February 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato - Original Soundtrack, Part 1 (1979 Anime Series) (Audio CD)
The title of this album entry may be incorrect. From the number of tracks, it appears to be what is properly known as, "Space Battleship Yamato, BackGround Music (BGM) Part 1" (published by Nippon Columbia, COCC-12869). If so, it is INDEED a wonderful set of instrumental music selections which were featured in the first TV season (the journey to Iscandar) of the American adaptatation of Yamato known as "Star Blazers".

I already own BGM #1, so I cannot comment as a result of buying it here. BUT, based on the other reviewer's comments, this must be BGM #1. Buy it!

One note: BGM #1 is all in MONO (like the TV show!). BGM #2 (apparently not listed by Amazon) covers the Comet Empire TV series, and is in STEREO.

If you love Star Blazers like I do, you must buy this CD! If you remember any songs from the cartoon, they will probably be on here. I have this CD and the Comet Empire one too. Let me tell you, THEY ROCK!

If you loved StarBlazers, then this is a must have! Although the openning and closing tracks are sung in Japanese, there is so much! All the beautiful symphonic sections truly moved me. I think I couldn't be much more pleased. Get it while you can.

This CD is excellent. It is indeed the Background Music from the first season. I especially like the 2nd and 19th movements; They bring back images of the planet bombs traveling through space (with the lady singing with reverb), and the jovial return to the ship after mining the Titanite. If you enjoyed the 1st season's music, it's a must have. The Japanese have created beautiful string arrangements.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Soundtrack, September 23, 2009

This review is from: Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato - Original Soundtrack, Part 1 (1979 Anime Series) (Audio CD)
Though it is a bit dated as there is some funky sounding disco like music in there lol, but i can recall the starforce uniforms/yamato uniforms pants kind of looked like bell bottoms, this was the 1970's after all.

The soundtrack itself as such was written for a television series anime/cartoon so it should not be expected to be on the same level as epic theatrical movie presentations, the music got better as time went on and the series became 5 blockbuster films.

The music is from a simpler time. Though the themes are absolutely heroic especially the yamato march, in comparison to other shows like Speed Racer or Astro Boy which sound silly in comparison.

The one real catch here is the music was recorded in monaural sound as the show itself was in mono sound.

If you can track down any of the re-recordings especially done by an orchestra they sound a good deal better having been recorded with a large orchestra not a small tv one, and of course in glorious stereo.

Like the Yamato Symphonic Suite, there was also recently a recording done i think last year in japan of some of the themes with a large orchestra and a cd released. I cannot recall the title as the site it was posted on was in all Japanese. Though i recommend both highly.
