Jack Flanigan, "a harmless American of Irish origins", spotted Odessa Tatiana Alekseevna Shuskulya reading a Russian newspaper in Harvard Square. At first all he saw was a chance to practice his Russian, and he plunged right in before he realized he was addressing the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.
While his senses reeled, Jack chattered bravely on about the two countries, the weather, the Christmas season -- anything to keep talking to this beautiful creature. She was alone in a foreign country for the holidays? Unthinkable! And before he knew what he was doing, he invited her home to Chicago to spend Christmas with his crazy family.
As soon as the words were out of his mouth, he could have kicked himself. A woman as gorgeous as Odessa is only alone by choice. Not only that, is isn't even Christmas on the Russian Orthodox calendar. But wonder of wonders, she accepts! And after a weekend in Chicago that includes a tree, a feast, a midnight mass, and a gaggle of contentious Flanigans of all ages, nothing will ever be quite the same for any of them -- especially lucky Jack Flanigan!
