= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Star Crusader (CD-ROM)
Note: This is for the DOS diskette version only!
This game came out around the time of X-Wing/Wing Commander/Etc. and so, was held to quite a high standard. It got panned by reviewers in favor of those other series and, in my opinion, this was completely undeserved. I'm a huge X-Wing/W.C. fan and I personally L-O-V-E-D Star Crusader.
Best Parts:
Play the war on EITHER side (either the Gorene Empire or the Alliance)...WIN the war on EITHER side (you'll find no "well, since you chose this side, it's impossible to win")...better yet, take strategic control later in the game.
By strategic control, I mean "STRATEGIC CONTROL" not "choose your wingman" (although you can do that, too!). You can direct your forces to attack regions on the large scale map, allocate veteran pilots to the fighter pilot training academy, order raids, recon runs, etc. You have the ability to disable and capture enemy fighters (my favorite when playing as the alliance...the Gorene Empire has some AWESOME ships).
The game's plot is non-linear, so a partial success in one mission will lead to certain follow ups...but if you replay it and let one fewer enemy ship escape (for example), then a whole new set of options appears. The voiceovers are great, the graphics are quite good (though still using polygons, not sprites, like Wing Commander), and the whole game experience very consuming!
Personal Favorite: Stealth Recon missions...
You take a ship with an EM damping ("stealth battery") emitter, fly deep into enemy space, work your way through the fighter/starship patrols (this is sweat-inducing stuff!), probe or scan an enemy installation or ship (or other ;-) ), and then try to work your way out to your exfiltration jump-home point. It's like flying a submarine at silent running!
Overall, this game offers some GREAT gameplay innovations that no large-scale game house seemed to figure out for years and years, to my chagrin. You cannot go wrong with this game, the only challenge will be getting it to run.
I just purchased this game (repurchased) in the marketplace and will comment/reply to this review once I receive the game to offer up suggestions on how to get it running (I'm going to start with DOSBox from the sourceforge public gnu guys).
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! :-)
