... In this story, unpretentious but super-talented astronomer/ pilot Mike Call gets "downsized" (you'll see by his description of his stature why that's a pun) by a previous employer and lands a job in a small industry that has just stumbled upon a revolutionary invention with industrial and space flight implications. Not only that--Call finds a bona-fide nice girl as a love interest. There are some tense moments involving industrial espionage--remember, this story was written back when it wasn't trendy to see "the Feds" as villains yet. Call me a reactionary (and I'll thank you for the compliment), but it's great to read a story that has good guys as heroes rather than dysfunctional anti-heroes.

Good guy with just a Master's degree in astronomy gets laid off from his job since he doesn't have the Ph.D. union card. He does job search and gets hired for interesting research and development job that requires his abilities as engineer, astronomer, and pilot. I still like to re-read it occasionally.

This is a great adventure story with more than a little romance thrown in. While some of the technology is a bit dated now (in terms of computing power) it's still a good read. The characters are well-drawn, and the details of working in a corporate research arm of a relatively small company in the rustbelt of New England are entertaining. Corporate power politics, industrial espionage, finding a way to exploit a scientific break through in a profit-driven world... lots of good stuff as the hero discovers there IS a future for an Astronomy grad student still trying to get that doctorate. And if you're a fan of Piper Cherokees, you'll definitely want to read how 2-2- Tango ends up at the center of the story's arc. In reference to the title of this review, you'll enjoy this if you like stories about plucky under dogs triumphing against the odds.

I take this down and re-read it. It has romance, it has a reactionless drive, it has real science (after you allow the drive) it has engineers as heros. It has accountants as evil creeps. What's not to like?

... and I'm pleased to see that other reviewers re-read it as well. Not many books have that staying power. This is certainly one of Stine's better novels.
