Book Description

July 31, 1994
The lush, secluded mountains of North Carolina's Lake Lure had drawn Lauren Castle into their spell. It was here, in 1938, that Hollywood's glamour girl, Victoria Frazer, drowned during a scandalous affair with actor Roger Brandt. Few knew about the baby spirited into the night. That baby was Lauren's mother. Just two years ago, Lauren's husband, returned to Lake Lure to film a documentary on Brandt, had himself died. Now Lauren has received a warning that her husband was murdered. Will she be next? The answers lie in the murky past, in the dark truths of a place shrouded in terrifying secrets . . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The latest in a long line of highly successful romances by veteran author Whitney ( The Ebony Swan , etc.) is a lightweight piece of fluff guaranteed to strain the credulity of her most diehard fans. Events are set in motion when Lauren Castle travels from her California home to the rugged resort of Lake Lure, N.C., as a result of an anonymous letter suggesting that her husband's death some two years earlier was not an accident. It seems that Jim Castle had learned something about the long-ago suicide of beautiful film star Victoria Frazer, who drowned herself in Lake Lure and who just happens to be Lauren's grandmother--a fact known only to Jim and his old friend Gordon Heath, the man Lauren has come to realize too late is her real love. Spaceships, UFOs and government cover-ups all come to light in Lauren's investigation, which is endangered by threats on her life. The bizarre climax fails to resolve a plethora of subplots, making this one-dimensional effort as unsatisfying as it is improbable. Only Whitney's atmospheric evocation of the rugged setting has anything to recommend it.

From Library Journal

Anna Fields narrates this lightweight romantic whodunit about the granddaughter sprung from the adulterous affair of Thirties' film stars Roger Brandt and Victoria Frazer. Lauren Castle is called to Lake Lure, North Carolina, to investigate the untimely death of her husband, Jim. Jim was producing a documentary about Roger. He has possibly uncovered further information about Victoria's suicide. The many convoluted subplots and romances fail to enhance the plot, however. Reader Fields's male voices lack character. She has one slow-paced, low-timbre voice that has to do for all the men in the story. Not an endearing performance.?Sandy Glover, West Linn P.L., OR

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, interesting but unbelieveable, especially the UFO stuff, May 9, 2007
This review is from: Star Flight (Hardcover)
It kept me interested, but the UFO stuff never made any sense and was never explained. I enjoyed the story anyway and wasn't able to guess "who done it".

5.0 out of 5 stars A delicate intersection of past sins and present lives., May 6, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Flight (Mass Market Paperback)
Escapism: why the author writes and why the audience reads -- why I praise Star Flight. Once again Whitney engaged me with her lush, detailed setting, and that ever present ability to allow the reader that leap from simply reading to becoming a part. Characterization that is multi-dimensional, and always keeps me guessing until the very end! I close the book and immediately want to journey to that place, to experience the charm and beauty she so richly portrays

4.0 out of 5 stars Star Flight, April 24, 2009
This review is from: Star Flight (Audio Cassette)
I enjoyed this audio book very much. I grew up in North Carolina and now live in South Carolina about an hour and a half away from Lake Lure, the setting for the book. We visit there at least once a year. It really is a beautiful area, especially in the spring and fall. I could visualize all the places the author wrote about, and that made it more personal for me.
