A new and improved Star Fox,

I wasn't ever crazy about the Star Fox game on Super Nintendo, so when "Star Fox 64" first came out, I wasn't really dieing to play it at first. I went to the store one day and saw it on display where anybody could play it. Once I started playing it, I found out I was wrong about this new and vastly improved Star Fox. It's not anything like the original Star Fox, and in almost every way, it's a great game. The graphics were some of the best I had seen at the time, and the sound and controls were as good as they could've possibly been, and best of all, the game was a lot of fun. After I played it for awhile, it was so good I couldn't put the controller down. There was a line of people behind me waiting to play it, but I didn't pay them any attention. I played it almost a couple of hours and did something I had never done before, I beat the game while I was playing it in the store. That's the only bad thing about this game, it can be too easy. You can choose one of a few paths to take in the game, which will take you to different levels, but they all end up at the same place in the end. The one I took was too easy, but the other paths are a lot harder. Most of the flying levels have a pretty good challenge to them, but not all that much. The hardest levels in the game other than the bosses are the levels where you guide a tank that can hover for a few seconds and do barrel rolls across some awesome-looking territories while you have to avoid huge boulders from crushing you. Along the way, there are several ways to defeat your enemies. You can get bombs and make them lock on to your target before you shoot them, and you can use your regular lasers, among other weapons. You can also do barrel rolls with your ship that will deflect a lot of the enemies' lasers. There are also other moves that will come in handy during the game such as one that will make your ship change directions. All the while, some of your cadets who are on your side, will give you pointers about playing the game, and they will watch your back. Overall, if you like space shooting games, I definitely recommend getting "Star Fox 64," it's a great game.

... i've had this game for several years. i have played it and mastered it, beaten 1000 times, gotten every secret, and still find it is one of best gamesi have ever played. plotline is original, the ships, levels and end-levelbosses each take time and effort to master, not to mention each can be playedin two different modes (giving the game humongous replay value), the cinema is incredible, and it's a japanese fighter pilot game. those games not only are better than most others, but starfox is one of the best of those games. with it's ecrets, originality in levels, vehicles, and plotline, it's wonderful graphics, and it's rumble pack capabilities, you feel like it's reality. this will be one of the best games you ever buy, so you might as welltake advantage of it ...- TRUST ME!

I didn't ever like the original Starfox game, so when this one came out I wasn't dying to play it at first. I went to the store one day to check out some cd's and video games and they had it there at the display. I started playing it and found out that it was nothing like the original and that in almost every way, it was a great game. The graphics were awesome, the sound and control weren't bad, and it was fun. Once I played it for awhile, I couldn't put the controller down because it was so good. There were other people waiting in line to play, but I didn't pay them any attention. I played it for about an hour and a half and did something I had never done before. I beat Starfox 64 just playing it in the store. That's really the only weakpoint about the game is that it's real easy. However, if one path is too easy, there are different paths you can take which lead you to different and somewhat more challenging levels. The only levels that offered a major challenge were the tank levels where you have to control the tank and avoid huge boulders. Overall, if you like space shooters, you should like this game. It's worth getting and it has good replay value.

Let me start by saying that Starfox 64 is one of my all time favorite games, especially because just about every aspect is near-perfect, including Graphics, Gameplay, Sound, Replay Value,....let's get right down to it. First of all, the graphics are sharply defined, and make good use of the N64's tendancy to produce blurry graphics. The animation is very fluid, and there'e no slowdown--ever. The visuals also succeed in producing a wide variety of emotions; isolation, confusion, awe, terror, grandeur, joy, anything. Which goes right along with the music, since it achieves the same thing. The heroic tunes are just about the best I've ever heard on the Fun Machine, and the sound effects, such as large explosions and laser beams tearing up the ground, are pretty nice. Some people may be deterred my Slippy yelling "Fox, get this guy off me!", but trust me, the rest of the voice samples and in flight chatter really just add to the experience, and only a few people suffer severe hemorrhages from Slippy's antics. Now, to the gameplay we go, which is absolutely top-notch. You're mostly on rails going either left or right paths in some situations, or in the excellent all-range mode sections. You'll be piloting a tank once per game, the rest of the missions being in your Arwing, unless you get to Aquas, where you pilot a submarine with unlimited torpedos! Missions in general are similar, but some offer a lot of variety, like destroying missles heading towards the Great Fox before they damage it, getting into epic dogfights with the Star Wolf team, or activating a series of switches to set a train off course, crashing straight into Andross's supply depot! Multiplayer is all right, but most people don't care about it, or hate it. For me, at least, replay value is as high as it ever could be; there's just something about this game that will have me still playing years from now (though beating it is a bit easy).

The game plot is simple: Destroy the bad guys, destroy the boss, goto next level. But, there is more. You can choose your course direction by taking certain actions on a level. You can alter your path, by pleasing certain goals. But, most of all, it's really simple and fun, fun, FUN! The fact that the characters interact with others, is awsome, and the fact that you can save them, or let them fry, is an option I leave open to me. For Slippy ;). Also, there is a great variety of challanges and levels, so you'll be occupied for awhile. This game is very higly suggested. Get some friends, and play some fun multi-player games.

The one player mode is excellent. The controls are easy to master and the game itself is easy. The graphics are excellent and the music is sweet! The characters actually talk (Unlike on the SNES). This is a game that will last a long time.Too bad multiplayer isn't the same. The mode is fun, but suffers from lack of options. The character you play has depends as to what port your controller is plugged into. And the only four characters are the starfox team (Fox, Slippy, Peppy and Falco). There are only three levels and two powerups. However, by beating the game on higher difficulties, you can unlock the tank and the ablitly to play the characters outside of the vehicles to supplement the Ar-Wing. The multiplayer mode is fun, but only with at least one other person. For better multiplayer mayhem, get goldeneye or Super Smash Brothers. Mario Kart isn't bad either. All in all, starfox delivers with a spectacular single player mode. However, it fails to hit that same mark with it's multiplayer mode. Let's hope Nintendo fixes that with a sequel.

Starfox was one of the premiere games for the Super Nintendo, boasting some of the best graphics that any platform of the time could show off and yes the game, at the time, did deliever in what could be described in a "Tour de force" performace. When the game transitioned making it's way onto the Nintendo 64 I had to hail the calling of this game and buy it, so I did. The result? I was as happy as any person could have been after spending the money for this game, and it was worth it. The game is easy to beat, but, only on the easy route. There are hundreds of ways that give this game a replay value that could be unmatched at the time, such as getting medals for every planet in the "Galaxy" in order to unlock expert mode, or the ability to win tanks in multiplayer mode, or even be able to fight on foot. So, is this game worth the money you would pay for it now? yes, give this game a home on your shelf. Enjoy.

*The title is a quote from the final boss, Andross*
A more accurate rating for this game, overall, is really 4.5 stars; but, of course, Amazon won't let you grade in "half stars." A true masterpiece, Starfox 64 stands as one of the greatest games ever created for the Nintendo 64, and perhaps even all time. I recently got it as my first and only Star Fox title; and, though I'm normally not a fan of games with shooting and space ships like this, this game succeeded in impressing! Analyzing its features step by step, it's pretty hard to find reasons why this game shouldn't be loved: Storyline 10/10: The story is absolutely captivating! Though it starts out pretty simple and generic (the galaxy and Corneria are being threatened by Venom, someone save us, etc.) the backstory behind it is pretty detailed, the intro is epic, and the story itself takes on a whole new life when you start playing! Actually, YOU are the one who controls the story to a degree: you can pretty much decide, through skill and/or choice, whether things go great or awful for the Star Fox team, a heroic pilot crew you can manipulate. You control Fox McCloud, and only Fox McCloud, but you also associate with the three pilots of Peppy, Slippy, and Falco; why, just protecting Falco and doing certain actions on the first level can decide which way the story goes! This game does a great job of drawing you into its world and making you want to figure out what's happening. Characters 9/10: I have to commend whoever came up with these interesting characters: they make the game! Even on your own crew, each one is distinctive: Falco, for example, plays along the lines of "the tough guy with a secretly caring heart." Peppy is like the fatherly instructive type, and Slippy plays along the lines of a new school boy. Finally, Fox, the same character you control, often takes on a reserved leadership role (which makes sense). Each one has his own quirks; and, though any of them can be annoying on a certain level, you can't help but feel a degree of liking for each of them. Their lines, though perhaps epic for the time, can be somewhat cheesy and/or cliche (Peppy's, "It's Quiet . . . too quiet." is a good example); but the cheesiness adds to what is oddly a funny and light-hearted game. You often can't help but think, "I shouldn't be laughing at this," but you'll laugh anyway. It's just that kind of game. The A.I. of each character on maneuvering is decent; but, until you get skilled enough, it can be hard not to shoot at them or let enemies get them, as they get in your way at the oddest times (then fuss at you when you do hit them). Peppy occasionally gives advice that doesn't particularly help either, though it hardly ever hurts if you follow it. Speaking of advice, though, the game can make you depend on your characters if you're newer at it, as they can each do something useful: Peppy gives advice and often tells you where to shoot, Slippy analyzes boss health meters, and Falco often covers you. If someone gets shot down, you'll miss him. Finally, the characters are also pretty life-like in behavior: try shooting down enemies that Falco is chasing on some levels, and listen to his reaction to it. Graphics 9/10: Some issues with fog (common for Nintendo 64 games), but otherwise absolutely beautiful. The fog itself, even, can be justified, as you spend most of your time in the air. Though many stages take either a purely generic "spacial" theme, such as the asteroid field, the planets are really intuitive. In this game you can find a volcanic environment, which even mimics the "wavy" effects of heat, an ocean environment (full of fish and plant life), a couple of cities, a train depot . . . the works! The most interesting graphics you could see, however, has to be the part of the asteroid field you can "warp" to. Though it probably looks like you've taken a medication or something else you shouldn't have, you can't deny the mysterious beauty of that point in the level. . . . Please note, however, that what levels you see depends on what paths through the game you take; like the story, it's dependent upon your actions in the levels. Mechanics 9/10: This covers things like controls, ability to save, and learning curve (whether it's easy or hard to master). The controls, though they work well, are pretty complicated to learn. This complication, however, is eased by the nice training mode they threw in; a few rounds in training mode, and you'll pretty much have them down! The game can still be pretty tough to a degree, though; however, I was able to nearly make it through the entire game on one of my first three rounds (and I'm usually not too hot at games like this), before the Star Wolf team finished me off (they're pretty tough if you don't know how to handle them right). Make sure to master the somersault maneuver; I've never seen a game force you to rely on it as heavily as this one! In terms of saving, I was disappointed: there's no way to save; and, unlike what some people say, there's no password feature either. You'll probably get sick of the first level for that reason. While it's not a deal breaker, this game isn't for the busy person who's looking to play for only an hour or less and quit. If you want to experience the true value of this game, you'd better set aside at least a couple of hours for it. The lack of a save feature is the biggest thing that kept me from giving this game a perfect score, as I kept catching myself thinking, "This game would be perfect if only it had a save feature!" Music and Sound 10/10: No complaints in the music and sound department! It pretty much captures the mood, be it suspenseful, hopeful, dramatic, or even rewarding. The character voices are also well done, awesomely portraying the character personalities as well. I can't describe any of this justly, though; you'll have to listen for yourself! Conclusion: Star Fox 64 is a face of near perfection, if only a few small blemishes hadn't reared their ugly heads. Multiplayer, I hear, is lacking; but, overall, none of the minor flaws in this game are major dealbreakers. Personally, I recommend this game to people who are bored and have a lot of time on their hands; the replay value is great with its various paths! The final boss can be downright creepy, and . . . well, I think any critique could easily go on forever! Long story short, this game is an absolute steal at the cheap price it's at now. A fond memory in many gamers hearts, this Star Fox 64 still remains as a highly recommended game to play!

There are no words to describe the greatness of Star Fox 64. The fact that people actually took the time out of their day to rent a game that came out almost 8 years ago should render their arguments invalid.
If you're looking for GameCube graphics, you are going to be disappointed. Most people know this, but to those not knowledgeable, the Nintendo 64 is much older than the GameCube. Before there were many games out for Nintendo 64, Starfox 64 was one of THE games--and it still stands as one of the best N64 games in the library. I owned a Super Nintendo four years before I got a Nintendo 64, and I remember the first Christmas morning that I had Star Fox 64, the rumble pak, and the Nintendo 64 (not included in this deal, but only about $5 more on the Star Fox sold elsewhere on this site). I sat in awe of its awesome graphics and gameplay, and it was one of the greatest gaming experiences ever. I don't mean to take a walk down nostalgia lane or anything, but I got more excited from that game than I got from any other game--ever again. Comparing Star Fox 64's graphics to a Super Nintendo game's graphics is like comparing a 2005 Mercedes Benz to a 1999 Honda Civic. Even my parents were amazed by this game's graphics when I first got it 7 years ago. On a side note, it is almost sad to see people complaining about this game's difficulty. If you invest just 1 hour a night in SF 64, I guarantee you that you will have beaten it in 2 or 3 weeks--at the most! The fact that people think this game is too hard is a testament to how easy games these days are getting. Now, onto the game: if you accept the fact that this game was released 7 or 8 years ago, and learn to use your imagination(these "talking animals" are some of the coolest video game characters to date--and that includes Master Chief from Halo!), then you will find a great game with AWESOME replay value. Even after I beat the game regularly, I was able to find a whole new side path which took just as long to beat as the normal path, and was actually more fun than the original path, with the exception of the submarine level. After you earn medals on every level in normal, it moves you on to a harder difficulty, and it's twice as much as fun earning the medals over again, just because the combat is exciting (for 8 years ago, that is--keep in mind that you're playing a classic). While the posts before have proved that this game is too hard if you're bad at video games AND don't try (even people bad at video games can beat this if they persist--it's really not that hard), and the graphics are outdated, this game belongs in any casual gamer's collection...if not to play it, then to at least pass it on to your kids. |
