5.0 out of 5 stars Life In Balance Throws A Dance Party, June 15, 2006
By
Gordon Danis (Eastchester, New York United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Star (Audio CD)
Life In Balance is based in Pittsburgh, and is centered around Steve Sciulli on flutes and Ann Sciulli on quartz bowls and tingshaw bells-until now, that is.

Unlike their prior CDs "Live" and "Deeper," on "Star" Life In Balance adds some synth generated dance rhytms, guitar and electric bass, even a little didgeridoo. The result is a vibrant album to move to, along with some contemplative tracks that would have fit right into "Deeper." Steve's flute is generally front and center, whether on the more ethereal pieces ("United Dream States," "Viburnum," "Orbit Of Venus," and the beautiful "Opening," ) as well as the more dance oriented songs, like "Calibrate," "Dimensional Change," Prowl," and "Cyber Tribal," tracks on which Steve shows off his roots playing in Irish ceili bands by getting listeners off the couch and onto the dance floor. Several tunes also have a pronounced South Asian sound. Everything winds down with the strange "Ringo's Star," leading one to ask "What's next for LIB?"

The dance rhythms never overwhelm, nor do they detract from "Star's" spiritual core. But where is it written that "healing music" can't get one's booty moving? "Star" was a nice surprise from LIB, an enormously talented duo whose musical growth is just beginning. Three great CDs already, and I can't wait to hear what surprises LIB have up their musical sleeves for the next CD.
