Book Description

April 15, 1999

"Else Lasker-Schüler's poems are small red fires of passion in a time of total darkness. At great cost, she rescued her innocence from the brutality of the Nazi age and tested the resilience of her Jewish soul. In these translations, Janine Canan renders into English both the lyrical intensity of that endeavor, and the palpable danger and mystery that made it possible. This is travel at root-level."-Andrei Codrescu

Night Secret

I have chosen you
among all these stars.

Am awake, a listening flower
in the buzzing bush.

Our lips long to make honey,
our shimmering nights are in full bloom.

From your body's holy spark
my heart lights its heaven.

All my dreams hang from your gold.
I have chosen you among all these stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars A fair introduction to a lesser-known poet, April 9, 2009

This review is from: Star in My Forehead (Paperback)
Else Lasker-Schuler was a contemporary of Rainer Maria Rilke, Franz Marc, Georg Trakl and Gottfried Benn. Born in the Rhineland, she traveled to Berlin in her youth to establish herself amongst the Expressionists. She was outlandish in her behavior, dressed in Oriental and male garb and asked to be called Malik or Tino of Baghdad.

When the Nazis came to power, she was assaulted in the street and immediately fled to Zurich, eventually reaching Palestine. Judaism plays a significant role in her poetry and such Biblical figures as Joseph, Jacob and Hagar, amongst others play a part.

This translation is fair. I have a working knowledge of German and found Janine Canan, a psychiatrist-poet has rendered them with honesty but without depth. Lasker-Schuler's poetry is heavy with feeling, emotion and religion and Canan has translated them into English for readers of post-modern poetry. The poems read well but in the hands of an established, stronger translator, they might convey more of the weight and beauty they have in German.

It is a fine collection and a good place to start.
