In Charly’s Epic Fiasco: Star Power by Kelli London, Charly’s talent is put to the test. Charly knows her education can make or break her spot on the show. Charly loves working for her television show for teens, but report cards are due and she has to make the grades. Charly will not let anything ruin her hosting the most popular show. Charly decides to solve her own problem with the help of her co-star, Liam. Charly comes up with a new idea that will improve their ratings which will convince the producers to keep them on the air.

When Liam is told about Charly’s bright idea to host a makeover show, he agrees that it will keep ratings up. Charly and Liam work together to create the show and bring it to the producer’s attention. When they get the go ahead, both are sent to Tallulahville to meet the winner, Nia. Upon meeting Nia, both realize this project will be harder than they imagined. Nia is not what they expected and neither is her attention-getting twin sister, Mia. The making of this show brings out the good and bad. The more Charly and Liam work on the show the more they uncover about Nia, her family, the secret messages sent to derail them from the show and the town.

Star Power explains how being different makes you unique. Charly seems to keep getting herself into sticky situations that are pure entertaining. The author does a wonderful job creating new adventures for the main character to get into that have an underlining message. I believe Charly is an example for teen girls that you can do the right thing, can be a blessing to someone and have fun doing it.

I think that the girls in my classroom will enjoy reading this book. Even though Charly is a "star", she is very much like a typical teenager. In many ways, my kids will be able connect with the book and many of the characters. Having several other books in the series is always a plus for the classroom when trying to get reluctant readers to read. The inclusion of discussion questions in the back of the book is a bonus. This book is a must have book for any upper elementary and middle school classroom library.
