More About the Author

After trying her hand at a variety of careers, insurance underwriter, video storeowner, home day care and cleaning houses, Elysa Hendricks, a longtime reader sat down to write a short contemporary novel. When her heroine turned out to be a winged, telepathic alien, Elysa decided she enjoyed writing stories set in different places and times.

While living in north east Illinois she helped found the Windy City Chapter and the Futuristic, Fantasy & Paranormal Chapters of Romance Writers of America and taught workshops on writing at writer's conferences and at local community colleges. Recently relocated to central Ohio she's happy to be part of the COFW family.

Someday she dreams of writing on a laptop while sitting on a tropical beach. In the meantime she keeps warms during Ohio's chilly winters by creating sizzling love scenes.

4.0 out of 5 stars I loved the feeling of being in space and this book is sure to be a favorite for futuristic fans, March 30, 2010

Star Raiders by Elysa Hendricks

Paranormal Romance- March 30th, 2010

4 stars

Star Raiders is Elysa Hendrick's 2nd futuristic romance and is loosely based in the same world as her first book Star Crash. However, in Star Raiders most of the story occurs on a space ship. I loved the feeling of being in space and this book is sure to be a favorite for futuristic fans because even though it is set in space the story feels genuine and I immediately felt the attraction between the 2 main characters.

Shy Kendar was an innocent until she discovered the man she loved was actually under cover on a personal mission to arrest her father. Shy unknowingly betrayed her father and since that time has been unable to visit him since his capture. Even though Shy was unaware of her father's activities as a smuggler she is unwilling to forgive her naiveté and misguided trust in a heartless man. On the run and on her own, Shy becomes fearless and independent. But it is the secrets she hides that could be her downfall.

It is 10 years later and Shy is now a smuggler herself. She has her own moral code that includes helping the underprivileged. Although she does break the law she is careful to stay under the law's radar. Most of her smuggling includes helping poor planets or saving slaves from being sold to unscrupulous buyers. Now her old lover has returned and has the audacity to ask for her help after ruining her life. His bargaining chip, pardons for her and the rest of her crew.

Grayson Dane has changed since he first met Shy and his views are no longer black and white. He realizes now that Shy did not have any involvement in her father's activates and as a result has become close to her father. Through his job at Earth League's Anti-smuggling/Piracy he has tried to use his resources to shield Shy' s activities from authorities. But now there is a bounty on her head and she is accused of terrible deeds he knows she couldn't be responsible for. Torn between his lost love and duty, Grayson decides he must find a way to prove her innocence. But first he must convince Shy to help him find the real culprit.

The first thing I loved about this book was how the author set most of the story on a spaceship. I really felt the characters were in space; their travels and battles were amazing to read. I also enjoyed how the author created new species of crewmates on Shy's ship and I can't wait for them to have their own stories?! (I would particularly like to discover more about Bear and Silky's past.) But best of all I liked how the 2 main characters had a history together, it definitely notched up the tension between them. It made them feel more interesting and intriguing to read. I also enjoyed some cool plot twists that will definitely surprise readers.

However, readers who have read her first book will soon discover that this story does not have the angst of her first book. And what I found surprising about the Star Raiders story is how quickly the 2 main characters got `together' after the initial animosity on Shy's part. Comparing this book to her prior futuristic novel I feel that this romance is more mainstream and I think any futuristic fan will find it a guaranteed exciting read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting and face paced, October 23, 2010
This review is from: Star Raiders (Mass Market Paperback)
Fantastic?

Spacetacular! Yup, that's how much I enjoyed this book I am resorting to making my own word.

WhOo Hoo, I'm on a roll. Star Raiders is my second Science Fiction Romance/ Futuristic Romance read and I am enjoying this genre to no end. Normally, it takes me roughly 4 days to complete a novel but when I am fascinated (life of a working mom leaves little play time) that time line is cut drastically and tasks go unattended (sorry hubby). Luckily, last night my husband had taken the kids out so it was quiet on the home front.

My Review:

Elysa Hendricks has succeed in carving out a world for her motley crew of characters. The sizzling romance and passion is equally matched by the action, danger and adventure.. The strength woven into the characters is admirable and easy to fall into step with. Their mission became my mission and I wanted nothing more then to see them succeed. Greyson enlists the help of his once lover Shy. Shy has the means, smarts, and connections to bring down an intergalactic criminal who has been racking up quite a list of horrors and leaving Shy's calling card.

The storyline itself is riveting and face paced. Greyson and Shy share a history. They both have painful childhoods and both have enormous amounts of reserve. The secondary characters add another sweet layer to this novel. Shy's motley crew on her spaceship, Independence, all have appealing back stories. Elysa has shares just enough to help readers sympathize and comprehend actions without drowning us in their history. What the main characters don't know is that their history goes much deeper then they realize and their futures are infinitely intertwined.

Epilogue:

I am an epilogue freak. When a novel is not an intended series or if the main characters will change in a subsequent novels I grasp onto epilogues. The epilogue for Star Raiders tickles my fancy and had me smiling ear to ear. I don;t want to give the ending away but it's worth the read.

Star Raiders is thoroughly entertaining which is my main and primary expectation when reading a novel. Elysa is a new author for me and I am very new tho the sci-fi romance genre. With my newbie sci-fi romance status I would recommend this novel to readers who love a mix of romance and creativity. Star Raiders, is sure to please any PNR fan and keep you flipping pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hmm, cover has long hair. Story has short hair., March 28, 2010
This review is from: Star Raiders (Mass Market Paperback)
Greyson Dane is an interstellar lawman. Ten years ago he had gone undercover to capture Stewart Kedar, a smuggler accused of much worse. To accomplish this, Greyson had gotten close to Kedar's innocent daughter, Shyanne. He meant to use seduction, but never meant to fall in love. Still, Greyson betrayed Shy and imprisoned her father.

Simon Dempster had been Stewart Kedar's right-hand man. For over twenty years he has been obsessed with possessing Shy. Dempster has recently set Shy up as the one responsible for attacks on C.O.I.L. (Consortium of Intelligent Life) ships. Greyson is one of only a few who believe Shy innocent of the charges. Unless Greyson can prove Dempster's guilt and capture him within one month, C.O.I.L. will exterminate all sentient life on Earth and all outer worlds. To succeed, Greyson needs Shy's help. Shyanne may have been young and innocent ten years ago, but now she is a smuggler - at the very least. Shy has contacts throughout the outer worlds, access to places and information no agent could ever hope to have. Greyson must, once again, manage to gain Shyanne's trust and then betray her.

Shyanne learned her lesson the first time. There is no way she will allow herself to trust Greyson, much less let him ever learn that he had left her pregnant so long ago. But should C.O.I.L. make good on their threat to wipe out humanity, the planet her son resides on would be among them.

**** FOUR STARS! This romp through space has several twists, turns, and surprises. Whenever I came to believe that I understood everything, the author either tossed a bit of debris or a huge meteor in my path, causing things to spin out of control. Shyanne's crewmates are fascinating. I especially hope to see more of Silky, a hundred pound cat. The intelligent and telepathic feline has an ever-present entourage of feline guards she seems to be leader of. Silky is much more than she seems. THAT character deserves to be in more than a single story! So do a few of the other crewmates.

Though women are the target audience, I believe many men would enjoy it too. Packed with action, suspense, and romance, this story is out of this world. (No pun intended.) ****
