5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best prequels to a space odyssey that I have read, October 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: STAR REBEL (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of the best prequels to a space odyssey that I have read. F.M. Busby's characters are vividly drawn, and you leave the book wanting more from these characters. It was easy to get drawn into their lives, to root for the good guys and hate the bad guys. I'm glad that I have the first one, and I am determined to get all the rest. If you love a good sci-fi romp with great characters involved in vivid imagery, I suggest you do what ever you can to get your hands on these books.

5.0 out of 5 stars thrilling story about a young mans rise to control of power, June 22, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: STAR REBEL (Mass Market Paperback)
Busby twists a wonderful tale of Bran Tregare, who is abandoned by his parents in a apace academy where tyranny rules supreme. The author tells of Bran's gradual hate against the system and his rise through the ranks and the eventual rebellion that places him in power of his own armed spaceship. Busby's force on the emotions of the human mind as he describes the torments of Bran's life keep the reader sitting tight from cover to cover

4.0 out of 5 stars A tough education, January 27, 2000
This review is from: STAR REBEL (Mass Market Paperback)
This book, while having some similarity to Enders Game (Orson Scott Card), is an introduction to a series that has very few pleasant characters. Everyone is in it for their own gain, but at least Rissa and Bran are fighting on the 'good' side. In this book and Young Rissa, you learn why they are the hard bitten people rebelling against the federation. Well fleshed out characters and strong storyline make this a compelling read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another in Busby's exciting universe, March 26, 2009
This review is from: STAR REBEL (Mass Market Paperback)
"Star Rebel" takes place in the sprawling saga that includes Rissa Kerguelen, the Hulzeins, and the hated UET government. This tracks Bran Tregare from the time his family stashed him in the UET's officer training school, under a false name, to hide him from enemies in a deadly pwoer struggle. As chances of survival go, the academy (better known as 'The Slaughterhouse') is hardly an improvement. Bran survives the deadly, sadistic tournaments and the even deadlier upperclassmen and officers. It gets worse with his first posting, so much worse that Bran mutinies. But, as he defects with the first armed ship ever to cross over to the Hidden Worlds, a plan begins to form ...

Busby's characters join many others, before and since, in swashbuckling space opera. The Lensmen, Miles vorKosigan, Honor Harrington - readers never tire of bold heroics and improbable victories by impossibly good good-guys. If you're in that class of readers, you won't tire here, either. Bran lives up to the best of the genre. And, best of all, Busby has plenty more books in this series, if one just isn't enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for Sci-Fi buffs, September 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: STAR REBEL (Mass Market Paperback)
Busby writes a tale about the graduale corruption of an innocent to a "monster" from someone just wanting to survive to a force of change in his own universe. He create characters that you can believe, you hate them or love them you can believe that they are real people who have been forced to become who and what they are. The slaughterhouse is an example of horror of a corrupt system that has only one goal to instill obdience at all cost, Busby does an incredable job at makeing you see it and beleive it in your minds eye. Good job and I am looking for the other two in the series good luck in finding them to those others that are searching
