5.0 out of 5 stars Instant Classic
As a huge fan of choral singing, and one who believes you can't have too much Christmas music, I highly recommend this. The beautiful voices and catchy original tunes go along with traditional hymns to make this a family favorite for years to come. It sounds and "Looks Like Christmastime is here."

3.0 out of 5 stars LISTEN first - OK but not what I expected
Of 7 reviews of this product (as of Dec 16, 2009) all seven had given "A Star Still Shines" the highest possible rating. I'm glad that I listened to the sound clips before adding this to my shopping cart. Of the seven reviewers, one person had also reviewed some other products, but the other six gave this CD glowing reviews and had never reviewed anything else on Amazon...

I love this CD. I really enjoyed the mix of traditional and new Christmas songs. I saw the Glenn Mohr Chorale perform the "Christmas in Heaven" show a few years ago and this CD brought back many happy memories of that evening. This CD is a must-have for the holidays.

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome return to classic Christmas sounds, November 18, 2009
By
It seems that so much Christmas music today is gimmicky pop, with big-haired singers shrieking lyrics over hip-hop beats. I can't listen to any of it; my favorite Christmas music is all the classics: Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ray Conniff, The Boston Pops and of course the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. It's very rare when a new piece of music comes out that is worthy to sit alongside these beloved favorites, but this music from the Glenn Mohr Chorale is right up there. There are no gimmicks on this record. The melodies are pure, the music just takes you to another place and warms your heart. This is a record that will be played at my home during the Holidays for many years to come. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious Christmas music, November 14, 2009

What a great CD for the holidays. Whether you are playing it in the background or singing along with it at full voice, this CD will certainly be a delicious addition to your holiday season. I love the way the children's choir joins a group of obviously talented singers in a few songs. Blessed hope makes me want to cry. The soloists on the CD have a tremendous presence and the choir itself fills the CD with full bodied, rich sounds. I certainly plan to have this CD on my Christmas music shelf. Definitely worth a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looks Like Christmas Time is Here!, November 13, 2009
Wonderful! With a great mix of traditional carols and new songs that are sure to become classics (catch "Looks Like Christmas Time is Here" and "Christmas in Heaven"), this album is the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and New Christmas Music, November 13, 2009

After seeing this choral group at Alice Tully Hall this past weekend, I was hoping they might have some recorded Christmas music. I am very pleased with this collection. Among the traditional Christmas carols are some very appealing original pieces. This medley will definitely be a very enjoyable addition to our family's holiday celebrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic New Christmas Album By A Classic Choir., November 4, 2009
By
John Griffith (Woodmere, New York) - See all my reviews
I saw this album advertised on TV recently and ordered it for the holidays. I was familiar with one of the songs that I had heard on radio but wanted to hear more. I was not disappointed. Amidst all the glitzy sounding Christmas albums, this one is clearly all about the voices and it speaks more to the heart than many holiday albums I've purchased recently. Although the classic songs like Silent Night (done with a children's choir affectionately dubbed

the Cherub Chorus, the Christmas Hymn Medley (O Come All Ye Faithful, Away In A Manger, Angels We Have Heard On High) and The First Noel are all done well it is the original songs that really make this album special. Looks Like Christmastime Is Here has the feeling of a true standard Christmas song, Christmas In Heaven and Everybody Has a Guardian Angel are all top notch but it's the lyrics in A Wiseman's Carol that paint a lasting picture. It's almost a plea (sung with great conviction by The Chorale) not to get overwhelmed by the trappings of the holiday.

"Another Christmas time is here and what is there to show

more gifts to buy, more cards to send with so few days to go,

This year was to be different we said we'd take the time,

to ponder the true meaning of this blessed Christmas time."

The group is currently playing a number of sold-out concerts like their upcoming show at Lincoln Center because real music and real voices never go out of style. Curl up next to the fireplace, put this CD on and enjoy. A Star Still Shines -The Christmas Album

Of the seven reviewers, one person had also reviewed some other products, but the other six gave this CD glowing reviews and had never reviewed anything else on Amazon. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it makes me wonder if these people have a vested interest in selling the CD. The singing is OK in an amateurish style. The unfamiliar songs, from what I could tell from the 30 second clips, are nothing special. I agree that if you buy this CD, you will have a Christmas CD that sounds like no other in your collection. Listen to the clips first to see if it's to your taste.
