Welcome Back, July 21, 2004
This review is from: Star Trails (Audio CD)
Seven years on from "Weights and Measures", with various solo ventures under their belts, John, Geoff, Hugh, Vince and Tobin (plus some guests) are back! For SOTW afficionados, this is more of a "Save This House" than a "Go Figure" or "Two Headed". Acoustic instruments are to the fore and such electric guitar as there is is tasteful colouring to this fine collection of songs. Its difficult to pick standout tracks, but the XTC-ish "July" is classic. "Hello Cleveland" takes a swipe at the commerciality of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (what no Slits or Buzzcocks?) over a sort of Soweto style shuffle. "Be A Guy" pokes fun at the dumbness of male teeange existence and so it goes. Plenty of great playing and singing here. If you lost touch with SOTW after "Faithless" I suggest you get re-acquainted now!

One of the best SOTW releases!, April 1, 2005
This review is from: Star Trails (Audio CD)
This CD was actually a very pleasant suprise for me. I thought their previous CD, Weights & Measures, was pretty good but just not my favorite side of SOTW.
I was really suprised at how great this album was. It sounded like Spirit of the West! Musically and lyrically, they're pretty much right on the mark. Some great lyrics in here.
Like another reviewer pointed out, the album is more like "Save This House" than a "Go Figure" or "Two Headed." That's a good thing!
Waiting for Martin, Come Back Oscar, July, Wedding Speech, and Be a Guy are among my favorite-ever SOTW songs. They really contain the best elements of the band. "Enough, Already Alright" and "Morning in the Bath Abbey" are also good listens.
Check it out! It's a fantastic listen.

A great return to acoustic, July 10, 2005
This review is from: Star Trails (Audio CD)
A great variety of musical styles are represented in this release. The opening song, "Small, Small World," is electric guitar-heavy, but the remainder of the cd has a much lighter, acoustic feel. Star Trails is closest in feel to SOTW's 1989 release, "Save this House". As usual, clever lyrics, excellent musicianship, and a great mix of instruments set the work of SOTW apart.
