3.0 out of 5 stars Blish deviates too far from the plot of the original episodes for my taste, June 21, 2007
This review is from: Star Trek (Paperback)
Blish is to be commended as being one of the people that kept the Star Trek fires burning after the original series was cancelled. He wrote a series of adaptations of the episodes of the original series that were collected into several books. He also did not exactly follow either the dialog or plot lines of the series, something which may offend purists of the genre. However, since one intended consequence of the books was to introduce Star Trek to new people, that criticism is not necessarily well founded.
This book contains adaptations of the following episodes:

*) Arena
*) A Taste of Armageddon
*) Tomorrow is Yesterday
*) Errand of Mercy
*) Court Martial
*) Operation - Annihilate!
*) The City on the Edge of Forever
Space Seed

In just a few pages, Blish managed to capture the spirit of Star Trek and the message of the episode. That can be a difficult thing to do in print, as so much of the magic of Star Trek was visual. However, in this book he ventures farther from the plot of the episode than he does in other books. The distance is so great in some cases that it disturbed me. While I understand that the book was written for a new generation, the story should not deviate too much from the plot, for if it does then the episode is weakened. That happens in this case and some of the power of the episode is lost.
