Star Trek is back and even stronger in 2009. When it comes to toys - usually the best ones are in the hundreds of dollars and you hate to touch because of their price - however - Playmates is doing it right!
This PHASER has Detail, quality and Functionality. It is based on the new Star Trek film - and it is fun.
The PHASER is realistic looking with a silver casing. It has a light and sound effect of "activation or charging". This gives the users the illusion of 'control'.
The best part is the PHASE BARRELL. One side has lights and sounds for Dematerializing (RED) and another series of sounds and lights for the Stun (Blue)setting. It has a flip control too - to quickly go from one setting to the other.
Durability: I can see really younger kids might "over-flip" the PHASE BARRELL to hard. But if you use it as if it were real - no problem.
Educational Value; Not really - but it's great for playing futuristic cowboys-and-indians! (If anyone remembers those!)
I'm sure the cast and crew of the new movie had fun with the real props, but Playmates allows us to have our own fun too!
And at their price - you can't go wrong! Very well made.

It was just what my son (12) wanted since he likes Star Trek. It has a cool "flip" feature which makes it a clever toy. plastic, but it looks nice and is durable enough for "shooting" around corners and it lights up. He and his friends/younger siblings enjoy it whether or not they're into Star Trek. We ordered 2 and they arrived on time in pristine packages.

I've just received this Playmates Phaser "prop" that was seen in the new Abrams Star Trek movie. No pun intended, all I can say is I'm stunned by it! I didn't like it at first, but when I saw it in action in the movie, I wanted to get it straight away! Its mostly chromed and the features of the phaser is really fun! There is an on/off switch at the bottom. And on top, there is some sort of volume like dial that lets you power the phaser up. And the best feature of all is the flipping barrels from stun to vaporize mode just like it does in the movie!!! I'm having fun with this phaser and its not only for kids, I would recommend this to all Star Trek fans of all ages. The only downside of the phaser is the visible screws on the other side. If only Playmates would have covered it up.

Nonetheless, this phaser prop is something that adults like me can display proudly at home and say that this was the phaser Kirk and Spock used when they beamed aboard the Narada in the recent Star Trek movie!!! Excellent stuff!!!

this is a surpsisingly faithful reproduction of the Star Trek 2009 phaser: it looks right, feels good in your hand, and has neat sounds. the barrel flips from blue "stun" to red "kill" just like in the movie, and each has its own firing sound. there's an on/off switch on the underside, and a power dial that can be moved to make a "power up" noise. the sounds are actually really good.

now, i just need to vent -- I HATED THE PHASERS IN THE MOVIE!! they're supposed to be beam weapons! they're supposed to PHASE, not go "pew pew pew".

okay, i'm done. no matter my opinion on the source material, this is a fun toy and faithful reproduction, and will compliment a ST'09 costume. but for designs, i'll stick with my TOS Type-2, thanks. :)

I was going to do the star trek theme this year order 2 Phasers from the Movie 2009, Phasers very nice material able to switch from stung to kill however I noticed the laser does not come out of the gun?

I had to disassemble a PlayStation 3 and remove the Blue Ray Laser Diode from it, Open up the phaser solder the device and add a Li-ion battery Pack, that was for the blue laser for the red laser I had to to purchase a ruby and talk about cutting a hole in plastic. now it works the way I thought I wanted....

I was thrilled to see them rebooting Star Trek. I was hoping to see familiar faces and hardware. This Phaser is totally different from the TV series. It does have some design elements of the original, like the rear overhang, but that's it. I do like the flip tip for stun or kill, but it seems that those are the only two settings. The original phaser had many. Not to mention the detachable phaser one which this one does NOT have. Out of all the re designs of the trek props, this one offends me the least. I can live with this one. So if you collect these things, get it and enjoy.

The phaser is a good prop toy if you are looking for props for the new movie playmates did a better job than in the past.

the electronic sounds a kinda cheezy though. but other than that it is a good toy for the money

I'm an adult but decided to go to Halloween as a Vulcan Humanoid from Starfleet :D
I have no idea how this product stands up to normal, rough, kid wear & tear, but for me it was a total blast! It looked great with my costume, and was a lot of fun to play with!

It is a decent movie copy with 3 different sound effects. I got it for a Halloween costume and had a difficult time keeping it as my kids kept playing with it.

Pretty cool item. Has survived several drops to the floor without damage. Bought 2 of these for Halloween accessories. One had a noticeably dimmer light flash than the other. The center red/blue part flips around for different stun/kill modes. The phaser sound is pretty unimpressive but overall the gun looks good and is pretty sturdy. Good value.
