5.0 out of 5 stars A nessisary read for real fans of Star Trek, August 1, 2011
By
This review is from: Star Trek: Countdown HC (Hardcover)
I need to get this out of the way first off. I'm a huge "Star Trek" fan but was very much let down by that thing JJ Abrams has been calling a "Star Trek" movie. Simply put, I hate it. I stuck by the franchise when it went through the "Voyager" and "Enterprise" stages, and while both of those shows had their flaws, they were still, "Star Trek." That spirit of what it means to be part of humanity, adventure, science, philosophy and family that is the bread and butter of the "Star Trek" brand were still there, despite the fact that fans were jumping ship. I agreed, the series did need a break. When I heard about the new movie, I gave it an honest shot, and I've never felt so betrayed by a film in my life. There was little, if anything "Star Trek" about this "Star Trek."

Then I heard about the bridge comic Orci and Kurtzman decided to grace us with in linking REAL "Star Trek" with their abomination. So, not wanting to waste money on anything called "Star Trek" touched by Abrams, Orci or Kurtzman, I went to my local library to read this book. What I found made me presently surprised. I found that in fact, Orci and Kurtzman can write a true "Star Trek" tale if they tried hard enough. Set about a decade after the events of "Star Trek: Nemesis," "Countdown" tells the tale of a good man who lets vengeance cloud his mind, the tale of an aging legend who is ready to retire from his amazing adventures, and the tale of political foolishness and the consequences such actions can hold, as well as giving us at least one last good look at some old friends from TNG.

I won't mince words, despite all the praise the new movie has gotten, it has a lot of weaknesses in characters and story that for some reason, seem to be excused by the general populaces. While it doesn't fix everything about what went wrong with that film, "Countdown" does fill in a lot of holes and weakness so far as the Nero and Spock part of the film go. Both of their actions in the film makes sense after reading this book.

Paramount and IDW would be wise to make a motion comic from this comic book. I highly recommend it to every die hard Trekker out there that feels betrayed by the new film, or just plum don't get the mess that JJ Abrams has given us. A good read.

Very well written piece of work. storytelling and content is the strong point of this book. whether its before or after seeing the movie i think this book tells some great stories to continue and parallel the story told in the newest trek movie. Loved seeing some Next Generation characters being an integral part of the original series lives. Helps develop and explain some of the villain Nero's story and explains his drive better which may have been the only semi-weakness in the newest movie. But overall very enjoyable and exciting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story filler!, January 27, 2010

I'm a big fan of Star Trek, and really enjoyed the new movie, however I wondered quite a bit about everything in the "future" and how Spock ended up back in time. Spock explains it very briefly in the movie, but so many things are left unanswered. How did a simple mining ship get so powerful? Why did Nero hold Spock responsible when he was just trying to help the Romulans? This comic series (4 in 1 in this book) puts a lot of the old Next Generation characters together to help Spock in his quest to save Romulus. Tons of questions are answered and gaps are filled. It also adds some closure to the Next Generation characters.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Connection, January 12, 2011

A perfect bridge for the Star Trek fan with questions. Set ~10 years after Star Trek Nemesis, Countdown delivers us into the circumstances of Ambassidor Spock's journey into the past. Coundown provides insight into Nero's disposition, and let's us tie up some loose ends with member's of the NCC-1701-E's crew. While it is not a neccesary read, it sure is a delightful one for the Trek fan.
