This review is from: Star Trek Deep Space Nine 9: Harbinger *SPECIAL EDITION* in Custom 'Communications Badge' Case (PC) (CD-ROM)
This is a great game, which features beautiful graphics and gameplay. The characters look realistic and are played by their respective actors from the TV series. The game begins with the same opening scene as the show Deep Space Nine (shot of an asteroid traveling through space, and then shots of the DS9 station, with the credits), and even features the traditional "Captain's Log" prologue scene, just like the episodes. All these things combine to create the atmosphere of really being inside an episode of the show, and really getting to know and communicate with the characters.
You do not play as any of the main characters from the show in this game. Instead, you play as a new character, who never appeared in the series, and is visiting the station for the first time. This is initially a disappointment, but once the player gets into the game, I think they can appreciate the genius behind it. By forcing you to play as a new character who doesn't already know the crew, the game brings you inside the story and makes you feel as though you really are there. You aren't someone who knows the crew, and the crew doesn't know you. You're a new face, and you have to get to know them, just as they have to get to know you. It really does feel like you're living inside an episode of DS9 and meeting the characters for the first time. And that feeling is priceless to any Trekkie. Things you can do in this game include: - Carrying on conversations with the characters (the game lets you choose the appropriate response when they talk to you, similar to the traditional LucasArts gaming style). - Using the station's computers (again, the game's recreation is fantastic, and this looks a lot like the computer systems on the show). - Manning the station's defense system, (a typical shoot 'em up arcade style game). - Meeting aliens As I've stated, the game's greatest feature is its ability to recreate the feeling of a real ST:DS9 episode. It has the same sci-fi mystery feel as the show. The game even comes in a specially-made box in the shape of the com-badges from Star Trek. It seems as though the designers of this game knew Star Trek well, and they did an excellent job of recreating the feel. The game is shown from the first person perspective, so it really does look and feel as though you're living inside the show. One disappointing feature is that not all of the characters appear in the show. To be specific, only Commander Sisko, Dax, Kira, Odo, and Quark make appearances. However, this is more than made up for by the rest of the game play, which almost makes you forget the absence of the rest of the cast. The storyline is also intriguing, and it really captures your interest. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who likes science fiction. One thing to note, however, is that this game is almost ten years old at the time of this writing, and the PC version was made to run in pure DOS--it won't run under Windows. Thus, if you choose to buy this game, you'll need to download the free utility DOSBox in order to get this to work. As I don't own a Macintosh computer, I have no idea about the compatibility issues involved in running this on a modern Mac computer. All in all, this is an excellently written game that is definitely worth trying, and is even worth downloading DOSBox for. I would recommend this to anyone who loves science fiction, and definitely to anyone who loves Star Trek. This game allows you to feel like you really are in an episode of Star Trek, and that's a feeling that you can't get very many places.
