3.0 out of 5 stars Cool star trek game, but aggravating
This game is cool in that it resembles star trek details pretty well (including some actual actor voice-overs), but it is very aggravating when it comes to completing the missions. It is extremely easy to get lost...if you have little patience, this probably isn't the game for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than Elite Force, February 19, 2001
This review is from: Star Trek Deep Space Nine: The Fallen (CD-ROM)
I have played Star Trek Elite Force and when I saw this game come out I thought it was going to be just another Elite Force.

I was pleasantly surprised that the programmers have taken some care to put in elements in the game that really MAKE it a Star Trek experience. For example the Tricorder. When I play the game I actually spend most of the time using it. When I beam into a new site for the first time it is the first thing I am compelled to use. The tricorder is important because it helps you locate objects you need and allows you to scan for shield modulation frequencies so that you can penetrate enemy shields- very important for your survival.

Because of this the game creates an authentic Star Trek experience that Elite Force lacks- I felt like a starfleet officer doing things a starfleet officer would do! Elite Force on the otherhand made me feel like a Quake player running around in a Star Trek universe.

The game is solidly built. Nice rendering. Projective shadows help add to the mood. Good music- but missing the original DS9 theme. No problem just swap their MP3 with the correct one :)

The biggest thrill was running around Ops and the Promenade. It really gives you a new perspective on what DS9 was really like. (Make sure to look for the fish bowl on the promenade- a nice touch).

The game is more difficult than I expected- even on the first level. I guess authenticity gets in the way sometimes. But fortunately cheats are well documented online- so no worries there.

The only reason I give it a 4 out of 5 is that this is basically a Quake/UnReal game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game: Serious Warnings, December 9, 2000

I. This is what old fashioned single-player gaming used to be about. The Fallen avoids the temptation that Elite Forces gave into and gives us not a frag-fest but uses the Unreal Tournament to deliver a story. This feels much more like Vampire: Redemption and the Thief Games than the Quake/Unreal engines which run it. Not that Frag-fest games aren't an outstanding way to pass the time but DS9 really demanded more of this sort of gameplay.

II. Appreciation aside there are SERIOUS technical problems. Check out the Official website's discussion board to get an overview, but briefly the game, despite the 3dFX participation has a real bad time with GLIDE hardware, and often it will not recognize D3D mode either. One can usually work around the GLIDE and D3D problems by using the OPEN GL mode and installing the 2 patches (One of which is 32 meg: That is TOO big for a patch in my opionin it feels much more like a flawed retail product that needed more work). Also if you are using a Diamond MX 400 there are additional audio tweaks you will need to make to get the sound to work properly.

III. In conclusion this is a great game but I'm getting the feeling that they rished it out the door to make Christmas sales deadlines and the game was simply not ready for retail release (I know they missed 1 release date as it was). Hopefully future support will address these serious problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good game even for non-Trekkie types like me, November 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Trek Deep Space Nine: The Fallen (CD-ROM)
"The Fallen" is a very solid game. I've played 2 of the 3 character missions, and really enjoy the story. The game looks terrific, as it should since it is using the Unreal engine, but I like the tweak of the over-the-shoulder camera. I also like the real differences between Worf and Kira, both in terms of weapons and in terms of tasks.

I was also surprised, as an amateur musician, at the quality of the soundtrack, which may be the best game music I've ever heard. My only real quibble with the game was that the missions were more of the same "fetch that object, and take it there" that this genre seems to rely on. I did like the overall story, however, and there are a couple of good twists, although they are not particularly difficult to guess.

All in all a terrific game, even if, like me, you are not a huge Star Trek fan. Final note: this game has actually got me interested in Deep Space 9 shows...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Better Trek Games, August 20, 2002

I bought this game for ($$$)(in a jewel case, in case you're wondering how I got it so{inexpensive}). Now I'm not quite a fan of Star Trek games, in fact most are boring with each level being exactly the same (Invasion, Hidden Evil). Well, I thought I might try "The Fallen" and give it a chance. It's now one of my favorites. The graphics are one of the major highlights; there are projected shadows, which are very rare in games, except for "Jedi Knight 2" and "Metal Gear Solid 2." The environments are all totally different. You can play on derelict ships, jungles, caves, ice planets, and even a submerged ship. The gameplay is smooth; loading isn't too bad if you have a good video card and a good processor. If you've never played a Trek game or even seen "Deep Space Nine" or any Star Trek series, this game is still a definite buyer. This game is in my opinion, better than Unreal Tournament.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old guy likes this one, September 1, 2002

I remember watching the original series on prime time and that's all I will say there, except, no, I do not live in my parent's basement. This is important, however, because I have seen all the shows and games develop over the years. I have a PS1 and have many interactive games, etc. I can still say this: This game is extrordinary. Even though there are not a lot of "puzzles" to solve, and the ones that are there are easy, so what? The graphics and action on this thing are superb, and playing all the games over and over is still fun because wasting the Cardies, Dominion dudes, and bad Bejorans is fun. Perhaps I got too much pleasure out of using the Sniper feature on the Star Fleet phaser rifle? Perhaps yes. Get this game. Period.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Star Trek game!!!..., January 8, 2003

I just finished this game, and boy, I enjoyed it so much~!!! Being a hard core trekker and DS9 fan, it was so exciting to play Sisko, Kira, and Worf fighting against Bajoran terrorists, Cardassians, Jem'Hadar, and the cool new alien race, the Grigari!! Above all else, I loved the story so much! It had all the mysteriousness and epic feeling that are hallmarks of the DS9 series! And, of course, there's hearing the voices of DS9 crew again! The only big complaint I had was, naturally, the fact that voices of Sisko and O'Brien were not played by their respective actors.. It was especially depressing to hear someone other than Avery Brooks portraying Sisko.. BUT, that wasn't enough for me to actually NOT enjoy this game, and I recommend this game to any DS9 fans out there! Believe me, you won't be disappointed! :D

I just got this game and it's pretty good. To get the most out of it, it is recommended that you play each of the characters. The only disappointment I found so far is the fact that Avery Brooks didn't provide the voice of Captain Sisko, and also that Colm Meaney didn't provide the voice of O'Brien. What is the deal with that? Are the two of them finished with the series and never want to look back on it?

Anyway, it is a good game with plenty of action. The artwork is out of this world as well. Many previous "Star Trek" games have been disappointing, but this one rates up there with "Elite Force" and "Armada". Get it. It's worth it.

I think this is one of the best playing games of a new genre of 3rd person - meets 1st person cinematic. I really got creeped out - impressed with the gadgets - and downright into the small story of the demo. Great job! Deep Space Nine: The Fallen is truly worthy of purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good game, June 20, 2001

O'Sullivan (Berkeley Heights, NJ USA) - See all my reviews

I happened to like this game more than Elite Force. The graphics are excellent and also the scenery is very mystifing(typo I think.) It provides several terrains which add to the suspence. From planets with snow and ice to planets with big valleys and high mountains with skys that are pretty. It also has several impressive Defiant locales which were not seen in the series and the neat thing is you can walk (for the most part) around through corridors which are relativly true to the series between important locations. One thing one can say about this game is the music soundtrack is better than Elite Force's. Two bad things which I found dissappointing: No Avery Brooks (Sisko) and no Colm Meaney (O'Brien.) The game is a more challenging than Elite Force because it is not only a shooter. There are puzzles that can be beaten with a little injenuity (another typo.) One final thing is you can play as Sisko, Worf or Kira and the stories are related. You play (for the most part) the same missions parrallel to the other characters and you really can't get the full game experience until you play all the characters. It makes it more interesting. All and all I found it very entertaining. I only hope they release a follow up game.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Star Trek games!, June 7, 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Star Trek Deep Space Nine: The Fallen (CD-ROM)
Much like the terrific series its derived from, Deep Space Nine: The Fallen is a great game that follows in spirit of the show.

I won't delve too much into the plot because its so thick with the lore of the DS9 series and I'd spend a whole 2 paragraphs describing it. Briefly, it involves Bajorans and their Orbs, Cardies and the Domoinion and a little bit of a new race not much spoken of on any of the latter series.

Technically, the graphics are choppy and ugly at times but you don't really care considering the year this was made. Aside from that, the building and ship designs are true to the ST universe as well as the tools, weaponary and characters.

Speaking of characters, only 75% of the actors of the show lend their talents to the game. Avery, Shimmerman and Meaney are absent but their "understudies" do a great job in their places. The acting overall is very good or as good as the show's performances.

The controls are easy to set up and use as well as the GUI. You can save anywhere you like in the game and bypass all videos at any time. All mission information is available to view for reference. I also like the Federation layout on the menu.

It's action packed and thrilling. Verious shoot outs with all sorts of cunning enemies as well as indigenous creatures on differnt planets.

The puzzles are well designed and pertinent to the plot of the story.

You get to play three different characters (Cisco, Kyra & Worf) in three different games that all parallel chronologically.

The only negatives are the occasional glitches with the video rendering but that can be fixed with a patch and the graphics.

It's one of the better titles in the otherwise lackluster crop of Star Trek games. Defiantely worth playing.
