4.0 out of 5 stars Not A Bad Little Toy
Don't be fooled by the box. The approximate length of the ship is about 15 inches, and the diameter of the saucer is about 7 inches. With the outer dimensions of the box being what they are, you could ALMOST fit two of these inside. One positive thing about the oversized box is that the toy itself is well protected if the package gets dropped!

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but not worth $30
Had I paid $10 for this, I would have been very happy with my purchase. But having paid $30, I feel ripped off. It's definitely not worth $30 (except, perhaps, for the fact that it's about the only option available for the newest version of the Enterprise).

PROS: It looks nice and has good detail. It's a decent size (just over a foot). It lights up. And...

The ship appears to be a decent representation of the Enterprise as it appears in the new movie ( judging from publicity stills and shots from the trailer...at the time of this writing, the movie has not been released ). There are a few noticeable discrepancies; the saucer seems a bit small, and the positioning of the nacelles on their struts is just a bit further forward than the actual movie design ( most likely kids won't care much ).

Being a Playmates toy, the detailing is pretty good, if basic. It definitely looks like a toy, as opposed to offerings from Art Asylum which look far more painted and finished, and closer to models than toys. There are a lot of visible screws, especially on the underside of the saucer, which has a second, unfortunately placed, battery compartment that does not seem to fit completely flush. The ship is molded in off-white/gray plastic, and seems pretty durable. The stand is molded in a transparent blue, with a silver painted starfleet insignia. The top is a ball joint, which fits into the bottom of the ship's engineering hull, and allows the ship to be posed in different positions. This stand seems relatively sturdy, and less likely to break than similar stands included with Art Asylum offerings. There are four sound and lighting effects which play at random when the top of the bridge dome is pressed. These include lines from Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock:

-"Arm phasers, fire everything we've got" ( followed by sound effects with flickering lights )
-"Captain, engineering reports ready for launch" ( engine lights slowly brighten and impulse engines come on, with a sound effect )
-"Maneuvering thrusters, Mr. Sulu" ( lights slowly brighten, and rear engine tips light up )
-Sound effect- red alert klaxon ( all lights flicker )

The lights are quite bright ( and with the exception of the red impulse engines and some small points on the saucer, all blue ) there is some light bleed through the plastic, but not too horrendous. The glowing deflector dish is particularly nice, as is the glowing 'spoke' pattern behind the front engine domes, which is reminiscent of the original television series Enterprise.

Keeping in mind that this is a toy, marketed AS a toy for kids and not as a super-detailed collectors piece for adults, this is a pretty nice piece. Also, it's great to have a model of the new Enterprise available for viewing in advance of the movie release.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting in a Good way, April 19, 2009

First off, let me just say that the official picture for the toy does it no justice at all. There's actually a lot more detail and color variation than is shown, it's no diamondselect but its better than what I was expecting from the picture, and leaps and bounds over the previous playmate movie enterprises.

The lights are very vibrant with a nice blue glow that is emitted from the bridge, bussard collectors, deflector dish, impulse engines, rear nacelles, and beneath the saucer.

The ship is also packed with a blue stand with a ball in socket style mounting to allow for different posing.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that upon opening the box I found it to be laughably small in comparison to the size of the box. The enterprise itself is 14.5 inches from tip to tip with the saucer measuring 7 inches. it's not dinky by any means and actually fits in nicely with the DS toys, but having bought it without seeing any measurements before hand made opening the box a bit of a shocker.

Overall I highly recommend this and think its a great buy, regardless of its size.

This toy was bought as part of a collection. It comes full assembled and ready to go as soon as you add batteries. This would be a great addition to any collection or fun for a child to play with.

I bought the USS Enterprise iconic ship here at Amazon.com for my 6 year old brother's Christmas gift. My little brother plays very rough, crashing cars into walls and each other, and stuff like that. I wasn't sure if he'd like the toy. I was very surprise when he did. The definition is great on the toy, and the lighting up and sounds were great. My brother was so excited. And it's very durable. He hasn't broken it yet ha ha. A great purchase.

PROS: It looks nice and has good detail. It's a decent size (just over a foot). It lights up. And the display stand is cool.

CONS: It's quality is cheap and poorly made. Many screws are visible, especially under the saucer, and the battery case doesn't fit perfectly. The audio is limited and sounds nothing like Kirk (I'm wondering if the toy manufacturer had their intern read a few lines into a microphone).

The lights come on only with the audio and stay on for only a few seconds. I wish there was an option to turn them on and have them stay on.

Very nice replica of new movie Enterprise. The metal recessed screws that hold it together are visible but does not detract from the way it looks! Sturdy, blue bright lights, clear sounds. Cost me $12.99 + NY sales tax - Very economical since these ships are usually very overpriced! Does not come with the 3AA batteries necessary to run it. But because of the low price it does not matter. NOTE: There are 2 battery compartments. 1 under the lower body - holds 2 batteries and 1 under the saucer - holds 1 battery!

Got this item Monday. Some parts of this item does not look like the ship from the movie. A few of the lights show through the plastic and there is extra lights being shown on the Nacells which should not be there. Also you can see the screws along the Saucer section. I got a NCC-1701 Refit model that looks more accurate then this thing. For any buyers, I suggest you wait for a AMT or Polar Lights Model to come out if they do make one and if they do, if you prefer it have lights, definatly wait for that. This thing is pretty much like the Refit Enterprise. A few different movie quotes and different light patterns. Would love to get a 1/350 Scale with lights you can have on at night.

I have always wanted a TOS original Enterprise, but this one (from Star Trek XI) is actually a blast to have. All lights work and function as they should. However, the voices could use a litte work (they sounded as if they where microphoned). And the scaling too, could use a litte tweak. Despite these factors, this new Enterprise will fit in nicely with the Diamond Select starships, and is, at leat, of a decent quality. Overall, I recommend this ship, and it will be a beauty when displayed on your desktop on on the shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FINE replica of J.J. Abram's new Enterprise, with minor differences. Worthy of warping into a kid's heart. (Of ANY age!), April 30, 2011

Since I was just a kid, watching Star Trek late at night with my dad, I've loved all things Trek. Like most true Trek fans, I was both wary and excited for the franchise reboot. (Star Trek (Single-Disc Edition)) But it turned out to be more than any of us could have hoped for. By the evening of the same day I saw the movie, I was scouring Amazon for... I guess anything really. At that time, this was at the top of the search list, and a bargain at $40. It was a price I was happy to pay, as it looked AMAZING. And so it was. It has a few minor flaws. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is certainly more toy quality than action figure or replice or model. But for a toy, it's a DARN good one, and very detailed. My only actual complaint was that the nacelles are closer together than they should be. Go on, check, you'll see. LOL But otherwise, it's a splendid toy, for kids of any age. (Including this old collector. LOL) It is durable enough to survive the typical way kids will zoom this around, though the paint might get scratched if they crash it into too many things. But hey, that's what it's for! LOL The batteries are a tad complex to install, but there are detailed instructios for where to install BOTH sets of batteries. And the sound effects and light up effects are first rate! I was just thrilled with the Red Alert klaxon, and the voices.
So all in all, this is a GREAT toy for Trek fans, or for parents wanting to turn their kids into Trek fans. This wil do the trick. LOL Give it a try. It's priced perfectly now, at a mere $15, and it's a decent size for the price. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you are at all a fan of the new Trek. Now if they'll just give us a replica of the U.S.S. Kelvin!!!
Thanks for your time folks.
Sincerely, R.A. McDowell
